Zantac

I have recently put my 2 month old on Zantac for reflux. It seems that her reflux is only minor, but the pediatrician thinks we should try this. I was wondering if anyone else had used Zantac and experienced their baby having a harder time going to the bathroom or having more painful and uncomfortable gas as a result of taking this med. I'm not sure if it's the Zantac affecting her stools or if it's another tummy issue and was just curious to see if anyone else had similar issues.

What can I do next?

My 2nd daughter was on zantac until she was about a year old.
It didn't bother her going to the bathroom or other tummy issues.
Are you breast feeding her? They sometimes don't make any bowel movements that often and it might be something you ate that is making her tummy ache. I know onions or garlic and sometimes if I drank milk it would bother my 2nd daughter.
I know you can give her myclin drops for the gas.
One thing I did learn about the zantac is that it will stain clothes. I went out and bought the big bibs so that if she spit up after taking it it won't get on more of her clothes and ruin them. My daughter is now 3 yr old and health but we do not let her overeat because she will spit up on occasion.
Hope your daughter feels better soon!

My daughter was on that as a baby and then again now and she is 3 1/2. As a baby she was actually spitting up more when she was on that. Well I took her off and she did ok and we thought she outgrew it. Now she says mommy it burns sometimes so we put her back on it. I have had to take her off again b/c its doing the same thing. She gets more chocked up and throws up. Its expensive w/ my insurance ($70 per mo) and the doc said there isnt anything else she reccommends for children so for now she isnt on anything and hasnt complained too much.

I am assuming that your baby was spewing vomit at every single feeding? Yes I meant to say spew. Reflux is usually marked by projectile type vomiting at each feeding. This would have to be the case for me to consider a medication intervention for my kids. My second child vomited at every feeding until she was 6 months old. She gained weight and had no discomfort from it, so I just let it pass and carried lots of spit rags with me. Diarrhea, nausea and constipation are all listed as side effects of Zantac. Just go to www.drugs.com to see for yourself. If the symptoms are new since the start of the medication, then call your doctor in the morning. Also, if you child is formula fed, I assume your doctor has address formula compatablilty too?

My daughter was put on Zantac at 8 weeks, too. It helped her tremendously! But at first we had the gross syrup and it was too difficult to get her to take it. We switched to Zantac efferdose(works like an alka seltzer tab). She did have bouts of gas and we used Mylicon. When we introduced solids, she did begin to have constipation issues. I took her to a GI Dr and she prescribed a powder that you mix with some juice as needed. Works wonders for our daughter. Now that you mentioned the sleeping part, Alyssa did not start sleeping thru the night until 8 months. I never knew why or even thought to think it might be the Zantac. But I can tell you that we tried to take her off of it and the reflux was horrible. I would seek a different medical opinion if you are not satisfied with the information you have been given. It won't hurt at all and you will feel much better. Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

My daughter has reflux and she is almost 8 months old. I had her on zantac when she was just a couple of months old and it gave her horrible constipation. The pediatrician kept insisting that I keep giving it to her, but I just didn't feel that it was right. So I took her off of it and switched pediatricians. She was so much better after that and started sleeping through the night. You might want to get a second opinion. I personally don't like zantac. Hope that helps! :-)

Our pedi started my son on Zantac when he was 2 months. He is still on it now and he is almost 4months. I dont think it is helping him with the reflux. He is pretty much throwing after and between every feeding, nearly 3 ounces of formula. He did go through the constipation thing for a while and I think that had something to do with the formula they put him on as well. With reflux they are "supposed" to drink a thicker milk so they can keep it down. He has been on Enfamil A.R. (which i absolutely do not like) for 2 months. I'm going to change doctors so we can get a real solution.
I dont think the constipation is due to the zantac I think his was the formula. Either way I began giving him nursery water twice a day until he softened. It works and he is just fine now. There was also another medicine they want to put him on that will work better than Zantac when I find out what the meds are I'll post it.
