Yummy Boogers?

So...I've noticed my younger kids picking their nose every so often...no biggie...part of being a toddler/preschooler...we've talked about it not being good manners....etc. The other day I saw my 5 year old pick his nose and eat it!? EWWWWW. I asked him about it and he said, "It really tastes kinda yummy, Mom." Gross. Gross. Gross. Double gross! I emphasized again that it really isn't good manners and that it doesn't seem very healthy to be eating something your body is trying to get rid of. Apparently my reasoning just doesn't compare to the yumminess of it all! Ick! Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

lol...Thanks! Good to know it's actually healthy...I'll just emphasize that no one wants to see it - but I'm not going to get too worked up over it. I've seen my kids eat it a few times before...usually when they're like...3...but this was the first time I was informed that it actually tasted good! aiya. Anyway...thanks again for all the responses!

I don't really mind if my son picks his nose in front of me. Having boogers is uncomfortable! But I tell him that it's something that he should never do in public, because people don't like to see that sort of thing.

But eating them? UGH. I guess I would just emphasize that it's not polite and that maybe that can be something he does in private, like going to the bathroom. At least that way you won't know if/when he is doing it. Ignorance is bliss. :)

Actually, eating your boogies is good for your immune system. Scientifically proven, lol. I don't like it when my child is walking around with her finger up her nose either, but I remember boogers tasting good as a kid. Scabs were almost as good! Lmbo!

hahaha. Just keep telling them to quit it. It really actually isn't a big deal healthwise, the acid in your stomach disables the germs that may be stuck in the booger - it's an aesthetic issue though, and well, good manners.

I think it's one of those things that probably won't REALLY stop until their peers start finding it yucky, but you can try to discourage it. Just don't get all worked up about it.
Good luck!

I can relate to your distaste, but this is amazingly common behavior. My adorable, beautiful grandson was doing this for awhile. We finally stopped commenting on it, and he does it less. He claims he likes the taste. Shudder. But it won't hurt him, and may actually strengthen him. He's just re-consuming the same germs that just occupied his nasal cavity.

He is ls enough to talk to about germs... and about manners :) My 5 yr old wont pick his nose b/c of the germs.. my 3 yr old on the other hand...

Dr. Sears has some great advice for this, basically teaching alternatives to nose picking.

Yes, my almost-3-year-old eats hers sometimes, too! Yuk! I strategically place boxes of tissues all over the house, but she still forgets to use them most of the time. When I see her poking her nose I remind her that it's yukky and she should use a tissue. The stuff that really gets me is the snot! She's just getting over a cold and goodness the boogers that come out of that girl!! One time I was in the kitchen cooking and she sneezed, hubby was closer to her so I asked him to grab a tissue to help her. Well, next thing I know he's gagging as gasping... I walk over asking what's going on and he said that she had so much snot hanging down her face and as soon as he reached to wipe it, she sucked it in her mouth!! Yeah, that's just nasty!!

I have to say it was a cute but also a gross reply. Hehe. Kids are always in that stage of eating gross things especially around that age. I see it all the time! I don't want to give too many suggestions in fear of others thinking it might be cruel. I guess the best thing is tell him "No" and it is "Gross" or maybe even ask him if he sees daddy doing it at all and why he doesn't do it. I'm sure he will grow out of that stage. Maybe one day he will find it gross himself when he sees another child doing the same thing? I'm not sure, just a thought! :)

Good luck!!
