Young Teen Menstrual Cycle

I have a call into the doctor... In the meantime, any moms who have (almost) 14 yr old daughters with extremely heavy menstrual cycles? My daughter is anemic and IS on double doses of iron, B, C, etc... [She has some other nutritional issues due to gluten intolerance and takes quite a decent load of vitamin supplements for intestinal support.] She is on her 9th day of heavy bleeding and is going through sanitary supplies every hour. It definitely is affecting her school day. Any suggestions outside of talking to the doctor and her nutritionist? I would really like to avoid the birth control route but perhaps its inevitable. Thanks y'all!

What can I do next?

My flow has been really heavy and the doctor suggested I take Advil or Naproxen, because it not only help with the cramping, but it slows the flow.

I was always told, that if I bled through a pad in an hour...to see a Dr. ASAP. Since she has been bleeding heavily for so many days, see a doctor now. Don't wait.

Poor girl, I second that you should at least call the on care at the ER and see what they say. Thats a lot of blood to be losing. Could she have PMDD? Google it, sounds like she has some of the symptoms, and there are medications she can take for it. For me, birth control was a godsend, I got on the orthoevra patch, and never felt better.

Wow, that is a lot of blood to be losing. If you do not hear from the doctor soon I would take her to urgent care or the emergency room. Please keep us posted!

Wow, that is concerning ... other than follow up with a doc asap I have no suggestions for you. I think that with her underlying conditions I would second the possibility of getting care right away, is there an after hours Urgent Care you can go to?

get her to a doctor asap! heavy bleeding is one thing but for her to be changing her "supplies" every hour for 9 days is definatley not normal.. especially for someone who is anemic thats a ton of blood to be losing.. does this happen every time she has her period? or is this the first time?.. iif its the first time i agree that she could very well be hemorraging
& i would definatley ask about birth control, it will help regulate her cycle
-you have one tough little girl! if that was me at 14 theres no way i wouldve made it through school like that!

If the doctor doesn't call back soon, I think I might take her to the hospital actually. That is a lot of blood lost and doesn't seem safe for her health!

I don't have any other ideas, but please let us know what happens!

Sounds like she could be hemorrhaging. I think you should call her doctor tonight.

I was the same way as you with the bc, I even posted a question several months ago. If there aren't any underlying issues, which the doctor will tell you, go the BC route. My daughter, 15, is so much better since she started on them. She has more energy, better attitude, isn't missing school and more.

Good Luck!

I would see the doctor and verify that she doesn't have fibroids. If you want to try something before BC, try Female Balance from Dr. Schultz at www.herbdoc.com. I've had 2 friends have great success with this from both ends of no period to 6 wks of what you described with the same stuff. I am trying it now b/c I have similar to your DD for 3-4 days and it's hard to exist and the cramps are debilitating. I hope that you find and answer for her. Another thing that my mom used to say was to avoid sugar and take magnesium and calcium...more for the cramps than anything. I also found that stress makes mine worse.

Sorry to hear your young daughter has to deal with this. Glad I have boys! I wonder if she has fibroids. When I had fibroids I was afraid to leave the house, I had such heavy bleeding and lots of blood clots. That was years ago and I had them removed. Now that I'm 50, I have really heavy periods that sometimes last for weeks at a time. To get thru the super heavy days I use a soft cup and two tampons. Hopefully this tip might help until she see's her doctor. I was very anemic as well and the iron helped a lot.
