Young Scientist Sets... Worth the Money? Other Recommendations?

My daughter is going to be 8 next week, and she said she wants a science set. On the Toys R Us website, I found these Young Scientist sets... they look kind of cool... there's a series of them... but they're kind of pricey! Are they the type of thing you do the experiments once and that's it? Or can you keep doing the same stuff over and over (like a puzzle)? OR can someone recommend a really cool science set?

What can I do next?

We have purchased several of them- Nature Walk, Mirrors and Electricity and one other - we LOVE them...they are a tad expensive, but we tried the ones that were "similar" and less expensive - but let's use the right word - cheap...

Try ebay and amazon.com and see what you can get!!

GO FOR IT!!!

When I was younger my parents bought me a good, child's size, microscope. For me that was wonderful! There are innumerable things out there that can be but up and looked at up close. I grew up to go into medicine, so I guess it 'paid' off! My suggestion would be to do your research on what things are rated highly and know you may have to spend a little more up front on something worth using.

Someone gave one to Andy last year at Christmas. They keep making some strange stuff with that kit. Perhaps I should pay closer attention to what they are doing. :-/

So far as I can tell everything is a one of but still they are finding new things to do and it has been almost a year.

I bought the two from Lakeshore Learning that were for the entire summer.
I was a teacher and for people who have money to spare
it was fine. There are cheaper ways, like getting books from the library, but you still have to buy the prisms, cylinder, and other things.

The ones from JCPenney were 70% off but they are awful!

edmund's scientific has good deals. my son loves this type of stuff and we have never bought one he didnt! just read whats in it to see if you can refill the stuff yourself - lots of common household ingredients are used in these. also, go read the reviews of the kits on amazon.com to get a better idea of what others thought of them.
