Yoga Shoes

Has anyone used yoga shoes? What kind and where did you get them? Did they provide support? I haven't been able to do yoga for a couple of months because I can't go barefoot because of a nasty case of plantar fasciitis (posted about that previously and seeing a podiatrist). I thought about trying yoga shoes, but I'm wondering if they would help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As "B" said, plantar fasciitis is a form of tendonitis and not contagious. It is painful and against doctor's orders to go barefoot. I DID get Birkenstocks last July after my post and I'm not over it. I have spent hundreds of dollars on three new pairs of shoes (stability support running shoe, Birkenstocks and Haflingers, similar to Birkenstocks except even more support and recommended by several PF sufferers) and they are the only shoes I wear. I never go barefoot except for the shower. I talked to my podiatrist about Birkenstocks and he said, "They can help," but the next step is custom orthotics and/or PT. I also had a cortisone shot that didn't work and I'm not going to try it again. I don't think my doctor would do it anyhow. So, I'm wondering about the support level of yoga shoes. So far I've only been able to find them online so I can't try them on to see.

Thanks, Chacha, but I checked out the Foot Undeez and they look to have less support and padding than the yoga shoes I've seen online so I don't think they would help.

I ran into my yoga instructor this morning. He says yoga shoes don't provide the support I need. Looks like I need to heal (no pun intended) before I can get back to yoga. )-:

I ruptured my plantar fascia in March after having some heal pain for a few weeks. I play soccer several times a week and just ignored it...big mistake. In a cast for almost two months. Did tons of p/t with a sports chiropractor and got great inserts. Back on the field and still some pain, but the p/t made all the difference. I have talked to so many people that are still having issues 1-2 years after and more. Get some intense p/t and see how it goes. I wish you the best, I know how much it sucks to deal with this type of injury.

Is the reason you can't go barefoot because you are in a class and don't want to spread your foot condition to the other folks, or is it because you can't physically do yoga with this condition? If it's the first, which I'm suspecting is the case, why don't you just take your own yoga mat?

(Plantar fasciitis is an irritated tendon that runs across the bottom of the foot from ball to heel.
It can't be spread from person to person.
Going barefoot or wearing shoes with no arch support can give you excruciating pain.)
I'm not sure yoga shoes will have the arch support you need.
The last time I had it I got some Birkenstock sandals and wore them every waking minute.
I kept them next to the bed so they were the first things I stepped into.
The only other time I took them off was for the shower but as soon as I dried off I put them right back on.
After a month of this I could go barefoot for short periods of time.
After a 2nd month I was pain free all the time and haven't had a problem with it since - but the Birki's are so comfortable I wear them all the time anyway.
If you'd got some Birkinstocks last July, you'd be over this by now!

Can you use Foot Undeez? Those are my favorite for stuff like yoga. Capezio makes them, good quality.
