This morning I went to get my 11month old out of bed and he had one arm and one leg over the top of the crib rails, hanging on for dear life, and giggling his head off. Yikes! The mattress is already as low as it goes. What do I do?! If he had gotten about 1inch further, or if I'd been about 30 seconds later he would have been on the floor. Help!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I converted his crib to a toddler bed last night, and put a rail up so that theres only like a 1 foot opening. I let him play and practice getting in and out of bed for about a half hour before bedtime. He was SO proud of himself. He slept just fine all night and even stayed in there in the morning until I opened his door.. then he just got this HUGE smile on his face and climbed out of bed all by himself. He's pretty sure he's a VERY big boy now, haha. The toddler bed that his crib converts into is still pretty high for him (hes all of 18lbs so hes not a huge guy!) so we might buy him one thats lower to the ground soon.

AG, because my daughter was tall for her age, she actually had to be out of a crib by the time she was a year. i actually would wake up with her next to my bed saying mommy, i lay with you and the first few times it freaked me out since i know i put her in her crib when i went to bed. i found out that she was actually tall enough to climb out so the crib was not place for her. i am sure she sort of fell out a few times until she realized how to get out right without falling but i never heard it. i ended up taking her to a store and i let her pick an affordable toddler bed. it was realllly hard at her age to keep her in her bed/bedrdoom and honestly, had my stressful moments for a while but over time she felt like a big girl and enjoyed her new bed once the rules were finally established that she could not play in the middle of the night. it seems you may have to do the same thing. if he is about to fall out, that means HIS next step will be to climb out too. face it, he is growing up on you already...lol

I found my 11 month old like that about a week ago, they are daring little buggers...
I took the crib bumpers out and she didn't have her step so she can't climb up anymore. If you have those, definately take em out. I would also try a crib tent. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready for my 11 month old to have the freedom of a bed. Good Luck!

I don't know if I'd move my 11-month-old to a big kid bed just yet. Opening up that door, might mean more fights just trying to get him to stay in bed. Nighttime could become a battlefield rather than a calm relaxing event.
I had friends put loads of pillows around their baby's cribs so that if they do decide to jump out, they will land softly.
OR, you just do your best to flick on the monitor way before he normally wakes. This way you can catch him before he gets the urge to climb out.

I've always heard to leave kids in their crib as long as you can EXCEPT if they are crawling out! I think you can get a tent crib top or maybe it's time to move him to a toddler bed or big bed with rails. At that point you may have to put a baby gate at his door, because he will quickly learn that he can just get out of bed & wander around! Oh--do you have a video monitor? Those things are GREAT and I think they are worth every cent! Good luck with Little Houdini!
