Yes, I Know.... ANOTHER Potty Training Request!!

I admit it; I'm terrible at this potty training thing!! Our son is almost 3-1/2 years old and is not potty trained!! He will, occasionally, use the toilet to go pee and have never gone poop on the toilet. He will go poop ANYWHERE else, though! The other problem is that he is now in preschool. I'm needing to know the best and most efficient way to really get this done. Our daughter is 2 so I'm thinking I should just train them both. You moms have more and the best advice compared to any books I could buy! Any ideas would be great!!!!

I just want to offer you some encouragement and support. I have a 3 1/2 year old boy too who is not completely potty trained. He will pee in the toilet as long as I make him go every few hours and shortly after meals but has pooped twice in the potty. He is unmotivated by rewards. His older brother was not completey potty trained until 4 1/2, I had just about given up. Now at 8, he has some sensory issues that have just come to light along with ADHD and anxiety. It turns out the late potty training is very common in children like this and more pressure makes it worse. We've tried to take as much pressure as possible off our younger son so hopefully we will be done by age 4. Our oldest daughter was potty trained in week at 2 1/2.

Hi W.. I totally understand where you're coming from!! People used to look at me sideways when they saw my son wearing a pullup, not just because he was 3 1/2 but because he's always been big so he looked like he was 5. My son was 3 1/2 when he was fully trained. I tried the pullup thing, which only acts as a bigger diaper, I tried bribery, I tried this and that! The only thing that worked was taking everything off, putting him in underwear and letting him figure it out.... Be prepared to clean up messes but this is the only thing that really works. After a few days of pee running down his leg and poop in his booty he didn't like it..so he finally got it!! Hope this helps, good luck. p.s. same with the bed at night, wake him up a couple of times and take him to the bathroom!

I have 2 boys 4 & 6 and I am a single mom so potty training was interesting.

My older one was pretty easy. But I do understand about goes everywhere else but with you. I know this sounds really harsh but I knew he could but was for some reason being difficult with me.

I told him sternly I know he can with others and I expect he do it with me. (it is a control thing with kids) He pooped after our talk. so I asked him to sit in his room stink and all until he thinks he could do what he already knows how to do.

He hated sitting in it after quite a while... but I was not going to budge (again control thing) My son got the picture really quick and he would run to the potty with out me asking him if he had to go.

My second son was potty trained by my first son! lol They would have pee races who could go the fastest.

LOL

HI, W.

I have a three year old boy and 5 year old girl. I had them both potty trained at 20mths girl - 22mths boy - i used the some technique for both of them. And they both had it in a week. I made a poster and put it on the wall with a potty in the living room. Every day i would move the potty closer to the bathroom. And i took them to the store and let them pick out candy and stickers. They were allowed to pick a sticker if they peed on the potty and put it on the board, and have a peice of candy if they pooped on the potty. Also if i was home with them or my husband was- they would just have on long shirts - no bottoms, it made me more aware of the moments and them more aware of what was about to happen. They both got it and never went back - the only time i would put a pullup on was bed time or when we were doing arrends , and everywhere i went i would take them potty first- and i had a cheap potty that i kept in my van for emerg. i didn't want them to use the pull ups they were just on for ease of mind in public- after one week i took them off at night also - yes it can be messy the first two weeks but - it really works. I also took in my neice at 2 1/2 because her mother was fed up with the potty thing and i used the same technique and she also got it in a week. So three for three i say it is worth a try for you. Hope it helps, let me know what you end up doing.

Honestly, I am no expert whatsoever since I've been trying to "train" my boy since he was 2.5 - that was back in January!! Anyways, I thought I'd try one last trick & if this didn't work then I would forget about it & he would have to tell me when this was going to finally happen.

I knew the "key" to stubborn kids finally doing the potty thing on their own was to find the right "trigger" - something that would motivate them enough to just get the job done. Since my kid LOVES to play with toys, I figured this was my best shot.

So I went to the local dollar store & bought up like $30 worth of small toys. Then I created the "potty prize box". This was last Saturday AM. I told him, "You go to the potty like we've shown you - on your own - & you can access the potty prize box." I let him look inside for a few seconds & then put it way up in the closet.

He immediately took his pants down & went to the potty. Then asked for a prize. A few hours later I asked him to use the potty - he did, got a prize. He had 1 accident that entire day. Prior to this little experiment he would go in the potty when we asked but it was ALWAYS a fight, lots of whining, screaming, etc.

Today will be Day #4 & we've had 2 accidents. He still doesn't initiate on his own, but it is a huge step for us that he willingly goes & STAYS DRY nearly the entire time. He even stayed dry over a 2-hr nap!!

The prizes have been less & less - I plan to narrow it down to 1 prize a day for awhile - if he stays dry the entire day. Then work it down to every other day, that sort of thing.

So my suggestion is to think about what your son LOVES, invest in a few of those & implement a potty prize system - he has to follow the rules to the "T" - meaning use the actual potty anytime he has to pee or poop. If he doesn't use the potty - no prize. See what happens!! Good luck!!

ETA: I also bought his favorite candy & will use that to get him to poop on the potty (which he's never done - he turned 3 in July). Once he's got the pee thing down on a regular basis then I plan to give him candy if he poops on the potty - for now we put a diaper on him since he won't sit yet.
