My 7 year old has a front permanent tooth growing in and there is a distinctly YELLOW spot on it!! It is a dull, very obvious yellow color. She did not have any cavities in her baby teeth there and we brush twice a day, floss religiously and occasionally use a fluoride rinse. We don't drink juice or soda and my kids eat a generally very healthy diet. I am sick to my stomach over this, it looks horrible and I have no idea how big the spot is because like I said, it has just begun to grow in. It is so noticeable though that I thought she had something stuck there!! We have an appointment with the dentist next week but I am searching for answers in the mean time... I just want to know that they can fix it somehow!! Kids can be so mean and I am terrified that she will get teased :(
ETA - She has been on antibiotics but probably only 4 times in her whole life... would that be enough to do it? If so, what do you do about it??
I had yellow spots on my permanent teeth when they came in decades ago. They were from too much flouride, and were permanent. I got porcelain facings when I was 18 because they were so bad. Trade off was I didn't have cavities till I was in my 30's and I've only had 2 my whole life.
It could actually be caused by the fluoride. Look up Dental fluorosis, and ask your dentist about it.
My younger daughter had such a spot on one of her baby teeth when it grew in. Turned out that it was the beginning of a cavity! The dentist said that sometimes it happens (even though we have always brushed and flossed her teeth, etc). Anyway, when the tooth had fully grown in, they just drilled away the soft spot and filled it - they didn't even have to use any novocaine. It wasn't a big deal at all. She has never had another cavity before or since.
Has she had to take antibiotics in the past? My daughter did and her teeth had the same problem, she had repeated ear infections when she was a toddler and preschooler, and the antibiotics interfered with the enamel forming properly on her later teeth.
antibiotics can definitely do it.
high fevers can also cause permanent tooth discoloration.
it could also be from too much fluoride. fluoride is a funny thing - not enough and bones and teeth are super weak. a little too much and teeth have spots. a lot too much and bones and teeth are super weak. don't beat yourself up over it. my husband has discolorations from too much fluoride but he's never, yes never, had a cavity and he's over 40.
it is what is. she can have veneers later in life to cover it up if she wishes. maybe even now - ask the dentist.
my daughter had something similiar and the dentist said it was because she was breathing through her mouth while she was sleeping. I had noticed that she was breathing thru her mouth because she had a cold and was congested. He just scraped it off and all is well
My daughter (9 years old), had a baby tooth that got infected, so the adult tooth (right is front) has a white spot on it. She said she does get questions or comments about it, and it hurts her. We talked to the dentist, and he said he can take that portion out (I guess dig it out a little) and fill it in with a color that matches her tooth (then we looked at the colors). We have not done it yet, but plan to.
