We are going to Nigeria at the end of january, and they require Yellow Fever Vaccine for my daughter. Has anyone had experience giving their toddler/child Yellow Fever Vaccine and what side effects occurred?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Actually we are not going to Nigeria after all, with the unsafe living conditions there. My father in law's coworker was taken hostage last week, and they work at a big pharmaceutical organization! Thanks anyway, and I wasn't looking forward to giving her a live vaccine given that she is already on a delayed vaccine schedule due to autism running in our family.

My hubby is an infectious disease physician and he knows about the shot and adults, not kids. Having said that, he said that anaphylaxis is possible if your daughter has an egg allergy. The World Health Org gives it to children older than 9 mos. He suggested checking out the CDC travel website.

Maya,
This sounds like it could be bad. I would try to get a vaccine which does not have any preservatives, often mercury!, or determine if your daughter really needs to go at her young age.
Some of the websites are totally anti-vaccine, but maybe you can find an answer for your situation. Check out
www.mothering.com
Also, there is homeopathy available for detoxifying from the vaccines. This should be listed somewhere on the mothering website. The products also are available at Whole Foods Market and other health food stores.
Good luck.
Amy

Maya,

I used to do a lot of international travel for business, and from what I recall, the Yellow Fever vaccine is a live vaccine, meaning you can contract Yellow Fever from the vaccine itself. That did, in fact, happen to my friend's husband, who was not told of that risk at the clinic he went to. (I went to the same clinic and was told of the possible risk by a different nurse.) So be sure and discuss this with your daughter's doctor if they don't bring it up first.
