Yelling - Fountain Valley,CA

I have a 4 year old son, who just can't seem to do ANYTHING with out yelling. He;s always been this way but I am ALL DONE. Does any one else deal with this and how, I almost swear he has like a yelling desiese where he can't play with anything with out yelling. For instance when he rides his bike he makes and engine noise so loud I"m sure some of you in other states have heard it. Trains, car, motorcycles, and planes are just as loud but indoors. And god forbid it have a siren were all doomed.
But it's not just when he plays, when we do home work or read books or count eventually it turns to him being so excited he is yelling about everything, and because of this behavior I can't take him anywhere.

Now I have tried days where we "whisper" all day and he will just yell whisper, i have tried taking away any toy that he makes noise with. I have set up that he can yell all he wants outside but not inside , and alas nothing works, and to make things worse now I am turning into a yeller so I can yell over him...

Anyone have advice for this? He goes into Kindergarten in sept and I dont' think I can send him till we get this under control..

thanks
H.

My 7-year-old stepdaughter does this and we have pretty much given up. She has had her hearing checked, nothing wrong. Her teachers have not mentioned it to us; I don't know if she does it at school. She is a tiny 7-YO, so maybe she's compensating, but G-D she is noisy!

Good luck!

Definately make an appointment with an audioligist. When I was three I had a very bad accident when building our grandparents home. A huge door fell on me. I suffered some head trauma, that while thankfully didn't leave me with and brain damamage, it did crush one side of my face. They could not fix my ear. I am now deaf in the left ear. My parents had a lot of trouble with me speaking loud, unitl I was about 7 or 8. Finally my mother just told me that they could hear me and I didn't need to speak so loud. It did take a little to adjust, but on a positive note, I was involved in Theatre, and debate and I never had any problems with projecting my voice!! Good luck! He may be too small to understand that he is louder than everyone else, but it will all come to him eventually.

I have a 5 year old boy and he has been having this habit with me. I simply tell him I will not talk or play with him until he can talk nicely. It usually works. Be consistent and try not to yell back. Remember these are little people that are just trying to find themselves in this world.
And about Kindergarten, children usually act differently with their parents because they know you love them no matter what. I'm sure his behavior will be just fine.

Our 6.5 year old is loud guy & has been since he got his voice....just loved to hear the sound of it. In our house, we're big on praising the positive.....for everything. Demonstrate for him the level at which you expect his voice to be then any time you hear him using the agreed upon voice level, lay on the praise & gratitude thick! In the beginning you may want to use a reward chart, as well. Give him starts or stickers when he uses a nice, quiet voice & together come up w/ a reward. We're not too keen on tangible rewards like toys, etc, so a lot of times, our son chooses to have a special day w/one of us or a playdate w/his best buddy. As time goes on & he more frequently uses the expected tone, peter out the rewards but still lavish him w/praise. Our son can still be a Loud Larry but is much better about self-regulating & controlling his volume. Good luck!

Dear H.,

Now, now, now, you are not going to keep him out of Kindergarten because he yells at home - Kindergarten is an entirely different environment and the teacher will deal with it. She or he may work with you so that both home and school have the same rules about voice level.

Stop trying so hard. My gr granddaughter is loud too and she is about the same age as your boy. Maybe it is a 4 year old thing. Children are not programable - give up for a while, just enforcing the loud for outside is very good. Your family can work with it and my family will work with it, and some day they will learn to speak more quietly.

I used to work with a preschool teacher whose voice was very soft and the children learned to listen more closely - she paid a lot of quality attention to them and they wanted to hear what she said. I really did see it work. When we talk as loudly as they do, then we are demonstrating yelling to them, so that is not good. Develop some signals between the two of you that mean quietness.

Good Luck, C. N.

Have you ever thought that it could be his hearing. I have a brother who did the same thing and when he was 4 he need to get surgery to correct the problem. He had a build-up of wax that would block his hearing and they had to put a draining tupe in his ear to help his ear drain the wax more naturally. My son is loud like that but he is a very excited child. Most of the time he just wants to be heard. He sometimes can play without yelling but most of the time he is very loud. I asked the dr. to check his hearing and the dr. said that he is fine and that this is something they eventually outgrow unless there is a problem with his hearing.
I hope I have been helpful! Good Luck!!

My first suggestion is that you have his hearing checked. The John Tracy clinic in Los Angeles is free. If there is nothing medically wrong, he may need a behavioral therapist. You may be able to get him into the Lanterman Regional Centers system. They will pay for it. If not, check the Wright's Law website for a directory of learning disability providers. He may not need too many sessions to learn to moderate his voice. Let me know if you have questions or want recomendations on specific therapists.
Good Luck - Chris

Just a thought, but have you had his hearing checked. Sometimes children or adults who have hearing loss will yell or speak very loudly because they really do not realize how loud they are. I hope that's not the issue but you may want to have him seen just to be sure. For my girls, we have a poster board of house rules and consequences. One of the rules is to use your real voice which means no screaming, whining or yelling. If they do it then they must accpet the consequences. My girls are only 3 yrs and 16 mnths and it works well for them.

Hi H. :)

I wouldn't worry as long as he can hear ok. My son is the same way. He just doesn't seem aware of it at all until I point it out to him. I prolly remind him to "turn the volume down" at least 50 times a day. I think talking with a normal voice is a learned skill for children. Some kids are so enthusiastic about life that the last thing they are thinking about is their vocal volume hehe

best of wishes,
M.

I agree that you should have his hearing checked. Working in preschool, I have seen some children who seem to be unable to use a "quite voice" get there hearing checked & find that they have a slight hearing impairment, which had gone unnoticed. I would call the Dr. and get an appointment set up.

How is his hearing? If that is ok maybe he is just over excited. Maybe the Dr. can give him something to slow him down. I have a son with aspergers syndrome and work with all types of special needs children but haven't heard of anything like this. Not saying your son has that type of problem but hopefully you have had a Dr. check it out. R.
