Y'all, Ya'll...?

What is the 'proper' way to spell yall? Lol. This is a word I use quite a bit, and it gets very annoying when I am typing to be going along, try to type 'yall'... then go back and grammar-nazi myself into finding an alternate word because I'm unsure of the true spelling.

Help? :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks! :) That's what I THOUGHT it was... but then I would look at it too long and it would start to look funny...

I would also ask myself... "is it replacing the 'ou' in 'you', or the 'a' in 'ya'...?" (Yes, I was thinking of 'ya' as it's own word. lol.)

That's what I get for over-thinking I guess! :)

It's a contraction of "you" and "all" so follow the rule for the other contractions. The comma takes the place of the missing letters. So you'd have "y'all".

And remember if you are talking to more than one person, it is "all y'all." ;)

Yes, if you use the theory Y'all is a contraction of You and All then it would be Y'all such as Let Us becomes Let's or You Are becomes You're. Hope that helps.

Y'all. And for those of y'all who say it's not a "proper" word, "eat my grits". It most certainly is a "proper' word. Especially in the South!!!

Have a great weekend y'all!!! =)

Since it is not a word, there is not a 'correct' spelling.

traditionally y'all because its short for you all but I guess if you use slang like ya all then it could be ya'll because you would becomes you'd and the aposhrophe replaces the begining of the next word so I guess it depends if you're saying ya all or you all

I say and write it almost every day. Y'all is how I write/spell it, but I have also seen it written the other way "ya'll."

Well, since it isn't really a "proper" word, I wouldn't drive myself crazy with it.

That being said...

an apostrophe in a contraction takes the place of missing letters that are dropped when two words combine. Since you are trying to combine the words 'you' and 'all' it's the o and u that are dropped, so the apostrophe goes in their place.

y'all
