A month ago my daughter was infested with Lice. Once she was treated and checked out by the school ( Kinder) she was ok and back to school. We treated a second time as recommended and I had been checking her daily. We cleaned EVERYTHING. It turns out at least 6 others in her class had it as well. Well, last night we saw that she was re-infested with the eggs! So, another treatment and hours of nit pulling.
Does anyone have a surefire treatment for this? I cannot physically pick nits out for hours as I have health issues and it is exhausteing me and causing me to flare. I don't want to have to do this again! Any ideas would be great......

So What Happened?

We called Lice Doctors and had them come out yesterday. Due to my health issues, I was unable to spend the time to de-nit. Turns out I had it and my son was re-infected as well. Now we are nit free but will use the Lice Doctor protocol for 3 weeks.Oilve Oil each night in hair - all night to smother anything that may have been missed - microscopic. First week, every night, second and third week every other night. After the 3 weeks, it should be 100% gone. I may pull my daughter from school though... they don't seem to be concerned of the issue. Thank you to each of you who responded to my questions!

Once you get rid of it...there are shampoos that you can use to help keep it away. My son had it going around his class so we got one and use it every so often just in case. They have had one or two more cases pop up this winter but were able to stop it quickly.

The way I got rid of it was to saturate my DD's hair with olive oil each night for 3 weeks. After applying olive oil, put a shower cap over it and sleep with it overnight (placing a towel over her pillow). The lice will suffocate. Each morning, wash her hair first with dish detergent (it cuts the grease best), then with her regular shampoo. My daughter had it 4 years ago and we all did this treatment for 3 weeks straight. The lice never returned.

Know the life cycle of Lice. Look it up online.
You have to treat her for a period of at least 2 weeks. That is what my friend did with her daughter and themselves.
AND you have to check yourself/husband/and the others in the family too.
Or you/your child will get re-infested.

There are natural treatments or chemical.
For the natural treatments go to any natural food store or Whole Foods type places.
That is what my friend used for her daughter.

My friend, treated and checked themselves, put every bedding in a plastic bag and tossed it, and checked their cars and the seats too.
She also got the natural lice treatments AND the "repellants" for daily use on her kids.

You need to check her head everyday.

Once she has it, you're stuck with the nit picking. Don't know what you're using, but half mayo, half Dawn dish soap solution works well. Let it soak in for at least an hour, covered with a shower cap. It basically suffocates the lice, and makes it easier to pull the nits out. Also, you won't be exposing your daughter to harsh chemicals.

The best treatment is preventative action. Teach your daughter to not pile her jacket/sweatshirt with other kids' jackets (this happens frequently at school, dance, gymnastics, etc), do not share hats, do not share brushes or combs.

Remember to wash all bedding and dry on high heat. Put pillows and stuffed animals in dryer on high heat. Wash everyone's jackets.

Good luck!

some towns have hair salons that specialize in treating it, call around. Nit Pickers, Hair Fairies, etc...

When my daughter had it over thanksgiving, we relied very heavily on combing, but we got the package with the metal comb and a gel -- made it much much easier to do. Also, in case you haven't already, get the girl a serious haircut to lessen the work for you. My daugther's hair was already pretty short (chin length) but I layered it heavily in the back to make it easier to get through. She got tons of compliments too!

Remember that OILS prevent the eggs from sticking, so choose a normal shampoo that has oil in it (we used a coconut one) and then you can mix up a spray with tea tree, peppermint, and/or rosemary oils to help keep those suckers off.

Good luck, I feel your paiN!

Lice is everywhere. There is nothing that can prevent it other than total seclusion from all society. When you are at Walmart at any given time our health department nurse said that over half the people have at least one live bug in their hair.

They are everywhere.

Go to headlice.org.

They have the facts, not old wives tales that are rumor and don't do anything but waste time and money. Many of the items a person is told to buy to fight this issue is useless, they do nothing. Read facts, not boxes of stuff that will make the company a bit of money.

I wash our girls waist length hair in regular shampoo, condition it, comb it with a wide tooth comb to de-tangle, then have her sit in a little tykes chair with her head under the lamp light. I use a head gear style magnifying glasses from Hobby Lobby.

The water stuns the bugs so they don't move very fast. I section off her hair and start going through it in about 1" areas. I move quickly. I check her hair about 1-2 times per week if she has had any live bugs. I have beside me a glass of water and a rat tail comb, a natural bristle brush, some tweezers, and maybe some tiny scissors. If there is a section with several nits in it I will clip the individual hairs they are on but normally I just use my fingertips and slide the nit down the hair shaft and drop it in the water.

She has not had chemicals used on her hair. It usually takes 1-2 times of me going through her hair after seeing a nit for her hair to be nit and bug free.

There is a cream you can get the doc to prescribe. They put it on dry hair and then leave it on for the day or over night. It is called Lindane. It is like the shampoo but is much milder since you have total control of how much you apply. I have a friend who has a daughter that lives in a small town that fights head lice every year throughout the whole school. This girl will come to visit her mom for the weekend and they will get head lice each time. The only way she was able to stop the lice in their tracks was to apply this cream to her kids hair on Saturday morning and leave it on all day. They washed it off that evening. After doing this to her daughter that does not live with her she didn't get lice after a while anymore. The cream is not to be used more that once or twice though.

It is certainly harder with girls! My triplets had lice in the fall and what ticked me off is that the first grade classes had lice since school started and the school did NOT notify the parents and were lazy about keeping it under control. So a few months later when my triplets got it we had a huge mess and took a long time to get rid of it with my daughter. I had to cut off 6 inches from her hair to make it easier to comb and the only thing is to keep doing the combing using the gel. Just one egg left behind leads to a full outbreak again. I had to have my husband take turns checking and combing and if you have anyone else to help, hire them on! You're not going to want to use the chemicals over and over. You do it once and then again a week later but you'll want to not use it again for a long time. The combing is what does the trick. When you see a nit in the hair, pull it right out with your finger nails running it down the shaft of the hair. What the school nurse used to check was the ends of long q tips which looked like chop sticks so the hair was spread more and not sticking to the fingers so I used the ends of stick combs. Good luck! Oh, an if you can blow dry her hair every night after bath can help. The high heat kills them so if a blow drying every night gets rid of just one that's one less you have to worry about.

For prevention...We've had very good luck with the Fairy Tale products. Lice has been rampant in my daughters K class this year. She has not gotten any lice. They make an all-natural rosemary shampoo and spray-in conditioner. I highly recommend it! Wash regularly with the shampoo and use the spray-on conditioner every morning before sending your daughter to school. Also, if she has longer hair, make sure she wears it up. I believe they have lice treatments as well.

Exactly what Dori said...along w/ the treatments and cleaning your house thoroughly! We never had a re-infestation either. We did have to cut my daughters hair off (was down to her waist and took me 4 hours to go through. Very sad since she had planned on donating it.) :(

My girlfriend who is an elementary school teacher said they are having an issue with lice as well. She bought her son some Ladibugs leave in mint spray at Great Clips I think. Here's the website: http://www.ladibugsinc.com/
