Recently HGTV ran a sweepstakes where you could win $50k towards any home improvement.

Course, minus taxes that leaves, what? Maybe 35k roughly?

For 35k I could def have a fabulous three tiered deck with a lot of new landscaping. But not enough for a pool too, or even and outdoor kitchen really.

Enough to do my kitchen, that'd be cool....but the Subzero fridge I like is 15k alone, sigh.

It WOULD be enough to do ALL THREE BATHROOMS, however. Fantastic!

So what would you do with it?

:)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, well I didn't read the fine print on the giveaway, so I don't know whether you could just take the cash or whether you'd HAVE to choose home improvement, but the question was what Home Improvement would you choose? Not what would you do with $50,00. Sigh.

Replace my roof - aaaah, so practial. For fun, I'd redo my bathroom, and the floors. We have decent carpeting, but I'd love all wood.

Oh yea, all new windows - I got an estimate on that recently and it would be the $35k, poof!

My house is only 5 years old so we don’t really need to update anything. When we moved here we got new appliances (Kenmore Elite). I would love to extend the pool deck and pool screening so we have more room outside, but the HOA would never allow it. Other than that I would take out all the carpet and put in nice tile flooring.

Maybe you could have a pool too. A vinyl lined inground pool, without a screen, can cost as little as $13,000.

Properly structured I could get you those taxes back. :)

Basement! Sure I may have to put some bank into it but go big or go home..

Actually since we do everything ourselves pretty sure I could do the whole basement with 50k

I would redo the kitchen. Rip out a wall between it and the living room and add a a half wall/bar where people can sit, put in new cabinets and countertops. New appliances. Farmers sink.

OR

I would redo our backyard with a covered patio and a fire pit, a zip line, a batting cage for our son, a bike trail, lots of native landscaping and drought tolerant grass, and a small fenced area where our yorkies can run around but can't go too far. (We have hawks living in the trees near our home.)

I love the shows where they crash people's yards and kitchens. I would LOVE to have them come to my house!!!

We have a VERY strange room off our kitchen, with a picture window to the kitchen & a sunken hot tub & fireplace on the other side. We kinda think the previous owners were swingers ;)

Anyways, I'd stop up the chimney, rip out the hot tub, level the floor & blow through the wall to make a wonderful great room off the kitchen. I'd also totally gut the kitchen & get a 2-level center island with seating for 6-8 people, and a prep sink.

Then I'd host the biggest and baddest party we've ever had here. You're invited!

I saw your (revised) question title and then I looked at the name of the person who wrote it and thought, "dear God, this must be serious."

You got me!!

I would have my bedroom done. I'd take our master bath and adjoin it to our master walk-in closet and make a really luxurious master bath, with a large tub (for 2 ;) and a large tiled walk-in shower.

Or...well nevermind. That's one too many dreams for a girl in one night!

Excellent question. I think about this sort of stuff all the time.

If it was on my current house, I would move my kitchen, then make the whole back wall glass- folding doors out to deck.

If it was in the house I'm thinking of purchasing, I would make the windows in the master bedroom much much bigger, and put a pool in.

There are actually about 100 homes in my town, 3 bed, 2 bath, even some with brick for $50K. I think I would just call it a day and go for a different house...lol.

Go buy this house I really, really want. It's this giant old farm house that needs a good remodel. I want a house to redo myself, we are just short on the down payment. This house has everything I want, a gorgeous in ground pool, a screened porch and a sun room. Best part yet, it has a bedroom and bath attached to the garage for my in-laws!

Damnit! I just went to check the listing and it's gone!!!!! It was literally my dream house!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guess we will just have to keep saving and build it ourselves.

I'd renovate my garage and turn it into a mud room and two extra bedrooms. Our bedroom would become a thorough fair, storage, and family room. Our children's bedroom would remain a bedroom. We don't use our garage for our cars anyway, so it would be a much better use of space.

It would be lovely to have a little extra indoor space, especially to house my not-yet-huge-dream-family. I have it all planned out in my mind...now...if I had that money I'd be in business!

We desperately need a 4th bedroom so we would probably add a 2nd floor to half of the house (a full second floor would be $100K so I'm thinking that $50K would be enough for at least the basics and we could do the finish work).

I'd probably also upgrade my stove, which is 32 years old. Oh and fix the broken bay window. Hmmm...the $20K septic system replacement would probably trump everything else. Central AC, a new roof...the list of possibilities goes on and on!

My "built in 92" house needs a complete redo of carpet, refinish wood floors, remove wallpaper and texture and paint walls, and (if I have run out of $) replace plumbing hardware and recaulk in the bathrooms. Maybe I'm not a big dreamer, I love my house! I just want it to be in the 2000's!

I would put a new roof on our house. Then I would fix the bathroom due to the leaky roof..

If there was enough left over I would start putting in new windows instead of the single pane glass old windows we have now..

We have a house we're hoping to buy, and since we're just dreaming, I'm going to dream about that one.

I would first replace the air-conditioner, which is about 30 years old and will probably go in the next year or two. Then I would re-landscape the backyard. Finally, I would add a mud room, some insulated storage, and a storm shelter off the basement where the garage is. Then the house would be perfect!
