My almost 5 yr old wrote her name this morning. Granted I wrote it first and she copied her name from what I wrote but she did it all by herself. I'm pretty proud of her. This was the first time she did it.
How old were your kids when they started to write/copy their names
Mine is a lefty. And her father nor I are so it's been harder to show her how to write letters

That sounds very familiar, writing their names at 5. How sweet.
Except my lefties wrote their names backwards - perfectly - through the 2nd or 3rd grade.
Yay! I don't remember when mine did...they were all in daycare with a pre-school curriculum so sometime before Kindergarten. I have their artwork all over my cube walls and feel bad looking at it that I didn't write the years on them so I don't know how old they were. Learn from me and write dates and ages on things!
The only one is distinctly remember is my oldest and that's because his name is Christian, which was just too many letters for him. So after a few months of laboriously writing his name in Kindergarten - and missing the instructions and not finishing his work as a result of the time it took - he shortened it to "Christ" which was funny but not quite acceptable. I let him know that his choices were Chris or Christian and he eventually managed to write out the whole thing and hates anyone calling him Chris.
Anyway...enjoy this milestone!
Congrats! Milestones are wonderful. Mine did that at around 4 1/2 or 5 too, but his handwriting was -- and still is -- a disaster. Any problems his teachers have with their eyesight, I feel personally responsible -- sigh.

Between 3 and 4.
At 4, my son was drawing Batman fighting a bad guy, and putting speech bubbles over their heads and taking it down the street to his older female baby sitter. :)
My son went to pre-school so he was doing his first name at 4 or so.
Now he does his first and last name.
My kids were/are doing it around 4/5, but that seems to be delayed to me--probably because they spend too much time playing with their Leap Pad or iPad. Most of the preschoolers I taught several years ago were writing their names by 4.
Both of my kids (one who is predominately left handed) could print their names without copying by the time they were 4. Granted sometimes letters were backwards or not formed exactly right and sometimes the entire name was backwards. But, it was recognizably their names. It takes some kids longer, but as a teacher I can tell you that kids should be able to write their name when they start kindergarten.
All four were 4 years old.
Both of mine were 3, but their preschools required it for entry to pre-K at age 4.
I think 4 is more typical and in line with fine-motor skills. My friend's 4 year old is in Montessori and her school doesn't even teach writing until age 6.
My daughter started school at 3 3/4 so she was doing it within the first few weeks. We are in Canada so we have jr. and sr. kindergarten and they start very early here. Congrats to your daughter, its a great and very proud moment for everyone involved when they hit such milestones. They grow too fast though!

3 almost four and this is pretty typical at preschool.
I do know some kids who were older (5 almost 6). Writing was not something the parents practiced with the kids. These kids have nice handwriting for their age (now 7).
About the same age. This is a great milestone to pass.
parentcenter.com has a program where you can sign up using kiddos ages and they'll email you stages and milestones that are next and it's fun to watch for those signs they're on track.
Around 4. I found a bunch of "chase" written on the wall. =)
Write cursive or print? Kids are required to print their name before they start kindergarten here, so they need to do it by age 4 or 5. They teach them in preschool (ages 3 and 4), and kids who don't go to preschool learn in Literacy Links the summer before they start kindergarten. They don't learn to write cursive until the end of third grade.
ETA: My kids are right handed.
I can't remember exactly-- about 4 or 5... I had him practice by having him sign his 'thank you' pictures for gifts he received. (I wrote the note, he drew a picture, he signed.)
Great that your little one is getting some practice now. Come kindergarten, they will be doing this a LOT.
