Would You Take Him In?

My 6 year old son hasn't been feeling good since this past Friday. He has been complaining of his belly hurting, not eating, and has been vomiting (more like phlem and dry heaves). This was his day on Friday, Saturday, and today. Sunday no pukes but still complained and didn't eat much. He at times seems okay and then crashes. So not like him. Especially at Christmas! So, as I tucked him in tonight and he only had a popsickle to eat since lunch and is crying because he doesn't feel good I am wondering if I should call the doctor tomorrow. Would you?

What can I do next?

Yes. I would also try to at least get some more fluids in him now. A day hear or there without eating much is ok but you have to keep fluid going especially since he was vomitting. More important than the not eating and vomitting is the fact that he is complaining, crying, and not acting himself.

I would call the doctor NOW, describe his symptoms and let him/her decide if he needs to be taken to the ER or seen in the am.

I would. He could have a bowel obstruction or something. It could be nothing, but after several days of this, it is better to talk to the doc than let it keep going. If he was faking, he would not act like this for days at Christmas.

Yes! I would take him in to rule out an appendicitis. Poor little guy! I hope he starts to feel better soon.

more than 3 days of vomiting - I would take him in.

I would also check his fluid intake and urine to make sure it's not dark (signs of dehydration).

If he is tender in or around his stomach - it could be his appendix. That's nothing to mess around with.

Call the on-call nurse tonight and see what she says. if she says bring him in in the AM - do it.

I hope it's nothing serious and just a bug!!

yes.

Is he drinking enough? He could be getting dehydrated, which can be dangerous.

Stomach pain could mean several things. Anything that lasts three days should be checked by a doctor, IMO. Is the pain in his stomach on the right side? Pain, with vomiting, can be appendicitis, and if this has been since Friday, he should be taken to the ER.

Listen to your instincts. Since you have doubts and questions, call your pediatrician. Describe the symptoms in detail and she'll let you know if it warrants a trip in. She'll probably want to see if he's dehydrated and see where his pain is located, so I'm guessing she'll want to see him.

Make the call and take him in the morning.

I would. You should rule out anything serious like a blockage. But it's likely just the stomach bug.

Yes, I would call in the morning and make an appointment for tomorrow for sure. In the morning, try and get some liquids in him if at all possible to avoid dehydration. Poor baby!

Yes. Call. It's better to call and find out you have nothing (or little) to worry about than not to call and find out you should have. Please call. You could even call now and find out whether you need to take him to the ER. Three days is a long time.

Well, you're posting this so you have concerns. Definitely call. Is there an on-call nurse line? Or call first thing in the a.m. Keep an eye on him tonight. Good luck. Hope he's better soon!

It is always better to be safe than sorry. Yes, in fact we were in the ER today with my daughter who is 6 months.. she had a fever, bad cough and vomiting. They gave her anti nausea meds and we have to follow up with the doc tomorrow.

I hope he feels better fast. It sucks having a sick kid.

I would call and tell them what is going on. It sounds like the flu. Our doctor will prescribe stuff at times instead of us going in.

That is what my daughter had... last week.
It was the Stomach Flu.
But she also had high fever.

It is contagious.
Keep him away from other kids/people if possible.

He is sick. So naturally he is very fatigued and needs to sleep.
My daughter was JUST like that, when she was sick last week.
I let her sleep, anytime, she needed to.
In fact, she only laid down, ALL day, on the sofa.
She could not get up.
She was in pain and uncomfortable and had headaches and the chills too, in addition to vomiting and diarrhea.
My daughter was even throwing up water.

I checked her with our Pediatrician.
She was dehydrated.

Yes, you should take your son to the Doctor.
Symptoms like this can be anything.

And, you NEED to make sure, he is NOT dehydrated.
If dehydrated... they will get dry heaves. Because, there is nothing in their system to vomit out.

Yes of course contact the Doctor and let them know what has been going on. I am pretty sure they are going to want to see him. I am real curious why people ask these kind of questions on here and don't go with what they know to do. I would never think of asking a medical type question on here or on any other site. I do understand your concern but go with your gut, take him in and if he didn't need to go in at least the worst that has happened is you made a visit to the Dr!

Honestly, why wouldn't you take him in? Yes, of course, take him in... Would you really not take him in because some people on the internet told you they wouldn't take their kids in? If you have to ask, then it's because you are worried. You are his mom, you know him best.
