Would like to Hear About Experiences with 1) Tubes in Ears 2) Tonsils Removed...

My daughter has frequent ear infections (both ears approx. every 4 months or so) and strep throat (alternating every 4 months or so). So we're sick and at the dr. every couple of months with one problem or the other. She had reflux as a baby and still has stomach issues, but we are able to keep her heathly with diet there. She has a deep, raspy voice (she sounds like a 40 year-old asthmatic smoker!) and seasonal allergies (she takes zyrtec now, but is switching to allegra this month). I am very concerned about her frequent use of antibiotics (we don't even start with amoxicillian anymore, we go straight to Omnicef). Anyway, she just finished a round of antibiotics and we went back to the dr. for the all clear only to find both ears still infected. Our next move is to the ENT. My daughter is 2 1/2. Is it too late for tubes? Did you find the tubes helpful in reducing the infections? Did your child hear better? Tell me about your experiences with removing tonsils too. Was it helpful? How painful was it. I've known since before my daughter was 1 that she didn't hear clearly. I know she hears like she's underwater. Her vocabulary is great. She speaks in 6 or more word sentences (loudly), but a lot of people, even relatives don't understand her when she talks and I end up translating. Of course, as the person who spends all day, every day with her I understand her completely. I just don't know if all this envasive medical procedures will ultimately help her or not make any difference - ya know? I don't want to hold her back by not doing them either! I know that I wish she wasn't on antibiotics so often!

What can I do next?

Get her tonsils and adnoids removed at the same time you get the tubes put in. Don't let them talk you into one or the other. My daughter was the healthiest she had ever been after she had all of this done. When the tubes fell out she started getting the ear infections again, but no strep! She hasn't had any antibiotics since the surgery. She sleeps better, she hears better and she is nicer. I really reccomend the surgery to any one who's child is having difficulty hearing. My daughter was 5. I wish we had done it sooner.

A. - My oldest son (19 now)..had a T&A and tubes (2 x) and still had problems with ruptures - though he was almost 4 when they fnally put the tubes in - that made a big difference - his first comment was "i didn't know Ashley could talk" and his sis was 2 years old! He did end up getting an eardrum reconstruciton at 14 to fix one of them, bringing his hearing up to almost normal in one and still a deficit in the other (surgery can be done once per ear and I didn't want to bank he wouldn't rupture again). My 3 year old son just had his T&A this last year - he's doing wonderful - his wasn't due to ears but breating obstructions and the surgery was uneventful for both. Tubes can make a big difference but if her tonsil and adnoids are overly large, only and ENT can make that call, get them out! Good luck! BTW...what do you use for your preschool? Are you a licensed teacher?

I don't know too much about the tonsils but putting tubes in her ears is the right thing to do. We put tubes in my now 13 year old step daughter when she was 11 and everything improved. She had the hearing of an 80 year old they told us. don't wait until she is in school and having to understand a teacher in the front of a class room. Good luck!

FOR SURE take her to the ENT. We reccommend Dr. Paul Bauer at Medical City or his Partner Dr. Allan Murray. I dont have the number right here but call medical city and get it. Any way, Our son is 3 and has had 3 sets put in. (he was born with cleft lip/palate and needs them but he also gets ear inections with out them. Our ENT just put a type of tubes in his ears that will last for 2 years. But we LOVe dr Bauer he is great. They have an audiologist on staff for hering tests at the office and you dont have to go any where else for that.

Good luck!- A. J

My daughter (now 2 1/2) had her tubes put in at 10 months of age. What a difference we saw!! It's definitely the right thing to do. But, a couple of things to watch for and not worry about. Her ears WILL drain after the tubes are put in. Natalie's drained almost constantly for a year after her tubes. This is a good thing! It looks nasty and is gross to clean up, but it's better for all the fluid to come out, rather than stay in a clog her ears up. Nobody warned us about this beforehand, so we freaked out everytime it happened. Now we know....just wipe it off and move on! She has not had oral antibiotics since her tubes, only drops in her ears once in a while. Good luck!

My daughter just had tubes put in yesterday and so far so good. Recovery is going well. She is 18 months old but had a early loss so we jumped to do this. She was not getting infections but her ears were not draining and over time that fluid would turn into sludge and damage her ears for good.

I just had tubes put in last year at 31 so you are never too old for tubes :) It was amazing for me--I use to get a sinus infection that led to an ear infection every time. Finally a doctor recognized this and sent me to an ENT who determined I had severe allergies and a deviated septum. After sinus surgery he was then able to tell that my tubes were not functioning either. Normally at this time of year I have already had 2 or 3 rounds of antibiotics but this year--NOTHING.

So adult or a kiddo--tubes are great. You can also look into chiropractic care for draining tubes but some moms I know who did this said it worked great short term but after a few years they ended up going the tube route anyway.
