Im a first time mom so i tend to worry to much. I get weeky emails telling me how my baby should be developing and he has been right on target. But he is now 12 weeks and when he is on his tummy he cant lift his head he tries, and ends up crying so i pick him up. He is able to hold his head up though but tends to lean it forward when he is sitting. I also read he is suppose to reach for object right about now, he isnt doing that either. Am i worrying too much?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

yes! you are definately worrying too much! Unsubsribe to that mailing list!

Let me tell you....my 9 month old never learned to roll over. He hates being on his stomach and doesn't last too long. But he loves it when I hold him up and walk with him. I don't even know if he'll learn to crawl - he might just go straight to walking.

You can put him on his stomach for a few minutes at a time every day until his muscles are strong enough. it's just like exercise - a little at a time.

I think you just have to let him take his time. Those milestones are a great guide, but every child develops differently.

Hi S.,
Congrats on your little boy! And yes, you are worrying. But I'm sure it's because you want the best for you little man. My little girl hated being on her tummy. When we would be on our way to putting her down on her tummy she fussed. She was a little older than your boy when she was ok with being on her tummy. We had a baby boppy that came with a playmat but you can take towels or blankets to make a prop. We would put it under her chest and her arms over it, so it was basically across her chest and under her pits. We would also lay her on our chest and then slowly lay back to get her on her tummy. Have fun with trying!

I have 3 children. My oldest could lift his head early and reach for things on the young side. For my twins, one did these things a week or two after the date I'd get in my e-mails. My other twin was several weeks behind always. I worried about him, but it was all to no avail. He ended up walking at 11 months and running by 12 months. I specifically remember feeling funny at his pictures when he was slightly over 4 months that he was unable to lift his head for the portrait. I guess I'm just reiterating that they all develop at different rates and just because one skill "lags", others may be early. In the end, they're all pretty much doing the same things by 3.

YES! you are. every baby developes differently. as long as your pediatricain says your baby is ok i wouldnt worry about it. my twin nefews were the same way because they were always put on their backs and never their bellies. when i started watching them i only put them on their bellies. just keep trying your baby boy will learn just fine and be ok

Yes, you are worrying too much! I did the same thing though. :-) If these are the updates from the Babycenter website, I found that they are VERY advanced. STill, my daughter is 19 months old, and the things they say she should be doing, she is no where near doing them! Don't worry, your son will develop at his own pace. Sounds like he's doing just wonderfully. :-)

My baby took a little while in doing both those things. I would try to put him on his tummy several times a day for short periods of times, and get at eye level with him so he can see you playing. My son didn't reach for things either till about 4 months. They all develope a little differently.

Hi, I'm mom of 4 and my kids were able to hold their heads up for a few seconds and then drop nose first to the floor. while sitting they could hold up heads but would look down to rest their muscles it seemed. i would talk to a pediatrition and also a chiropractor might be helpful. I trust Family Chiropractic Dr. Cliff Fisher and Dr. Rick Swecker. T. R

Worry is a natural maternal instinct. To me he sounds just fine. Every child will reach milestones at their own rate. Some hit the milestones "early" some "late"- but most are ON TIME! If there are severe delays, the pediatrician will offer resources.

Yes! You are! Unsubscribe to that email list, at least for now.

Milestones are just guidelines, every child is different. Your baby is doing fine. Continue with the tummy time for as long as he'll stand it. Don't worry about him leaning forward or not reaching.

You have plenty of time to worry, and trust me, it doesn't end but this isn't something to worry about. Enjoy your new baby!
