Worn Knees on Daughter's Pants

Hi Mamas,
Okay so my question is: my daughter has her favorite cotton pants (the kind made with t-shirt type cotton stretchy material). These pants are only a couple of months old, but because as children usually do, just from playing & sitting etc., the knees ALWAYS become so worn looking and then brown from any dirt that the knee area gets in contact with. And then the knee area also looks stretched out and faded looking.

I really hate just having to throw them away, because the pants are still good and not very old. I also don't want to put knee patches on them... and my daughter does not want knee patches on them either... because she said it looks ugly and she is a real girly-girl.

Does anyone know how to get the knee area of pants to look good again?
Or do you know of any "cute" type of knee patches that can be bought online? I thought maybe those iron-on decorative patches might help? Has anyone used those?

Thanks so much in advance for any tips.
Happy Holidays to all!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the responses so far!
I think I will have to peruse the JoAnn's website and see what they have! I never grew up with that store
so it seems pretty fun to me! I love stores like that!
I will show my daughter and see what she thinks... this seems like a real cute way to solve the
worn knee problem.
Glad to know I"m not the only one with this "issue." I know it's not rocket science, but still, I didn't want to waste money and throw away her perfectly good pants (except for the worn knees) just yet.
I wanted to know how good these "knee patches" were, since I never used them before.
Thanks again, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone!

There are all kinds of appliqués available at stores like Joann’s. Other sources would come from fabrics that you put some wonder under on the back of and then fuse to the pants. There are so many very cute fabrics of every theme and cartoon characters form the internet fabric stores too. I used to put hearts on my daughters knees. One thing that will probably help, if your fabric is stretchy your patch should be similar fabric. In this case you would do better not to fuse it, but turn the edge by sewing it to some wash away stabilizer first. Cut a hole in the stabilizer and turn the patch right side out. Sew the whole thing onto the knee as is. Then wash the garment and the stabilizer will disappear. Another tip is to put a patch on the knee before the pant is worn, giving it a double knee before it gets worn out. You get a lot less stretching out this way.

This is so funny, I used to do this to my pants ALL the time.

My Mom took me to then, House of Fabrics, now Joann Fabrics and let me pick out patches (like Strawberry Shortcake or something like that) from the store that I liked and she would design her own with fabric and transfer paper...I for some reason was very into Grateful Dead Bears, and she tracked those down for me at some hippie shop in Venice Beach.

We made it a Mommy and Me project, and it was so much fun!! I would help her cut out the shapes and show her where I wanted them placed.

I do patchwork on my son's stuff now too and it's fun.

Good Luck!

D.
