I believe you need to eat before you work out about 30 minutes before... this would give you energy to work out. If you do it after, you will be more hungry and tend to eat more.

I just started P90X last week and they say to eat at least 1 hour before your work out and then to have protein after your work out to help rebuild. Also to you may find you want a lot of water during your work out. If you're just walking that's fine but if you are doing anything aerobic only drink enough to wet your mouth. To much water in your tummy can make you not feel good too. Hope that helps.

15 minutes after you work-out you should eat protein. You actually stress your muscles when you work-out and as they are repairing themselves you need to give the proper nutrition to do so.

When you work out, your body releases lipids or fats in your body that has stored energy. If you feel hungry immediately after working out, you may not have broken a sweat. Listen to your body after the workout, more than likely you will not feel hungry for at least 1/2 hour if you didn't eat before. Make sure what you do eat has plenty of protein.
Good luck on your weight loss,
Wendy

Hi E.,

I eat a fat burning bar 15 minutes before my workout on an empty stomach. It helps with the metabolism and also inhibits the adenosine that causes sore muscles so it protects them. I have never been able to "eat" before a workout because I usually am doing something aerobic and not "machine" oriented. Too much food in your belly, especially the wrong kind, can make you sick.

Hope I helped!

M.

It is good to eat before you workout, so that way you can enough energy to get you through the workout. But you want to eat about an hour before if you do eat decide to eat before your wourkout. I wouldn't eat anything big maybe just a light snack. Eating after a workout helps your body. Eating something with carbs and protein can help the performance of your next workout. Your body "soaks" up the most nutrients after a workout. So by eating you are feeding your muscles and you can push harder and longer and your next workout. It doens't have to be something huge. Also remember to drink lots of water before, during, and after your workout.

Your metabolism is up after you work out and depending on food choices, it can actually help your body recover! I sometimes feel sick if I eat before I workout. Good Luck!!
I found a really good article on how to not enter a workout hungry and what to eat after a workout to help your body recover. It gives some great ideas.

I usually do my exercise in the morning because once my day gets started I just can't be motivated to go to the gym. All the trainers at the Y say to eat 30 minutes before you work out so that your body has fuel for energy and burning calories. So - I make a smoothie with yogurt and berries and bananas. Fast and easy with my hand held blender. Good job for taking care of yourself! You'll never regret it!

All the other responses are great. I always make sure I have a small healthy carb boost before I work out (like an apple or a healthy granola bar) so I have plenty of energy for my workout. Then after, get your healthy meal with protien and complex carbs. Make sure you do not starve yourself or you will end up slowing your metabolism and make it even more difficult to lose weight. Also, log your calories. If you are taking in more than you are burning you won't lose weight. And you may be suprised at how many calories some foods have. You can get that info on line, on food packages and from resturants. Good luck!

E.,
Check out the body for life program... it is an AMAZING program that is 12 weeks long. the work outs are hard... but not as long as other programs. I have seen results with this one quickly.. and you will be very surprised. this programs says to work out in the morning, simply becuase you are basically coming off of a 10-12 hr fast and you will hit straight body fat. then don't eat for at least 1hr after your work out. you will burn more calories the hour after the work out. this guy really is awesome...

I'm taking a ladies bootcamp class (love it!) and our trainer encourages us to eat something before AND after our workouts. She personally eats a small bowl of cereal or fruit before she starts her classes, and then she encourages a protein rich meal or snack afterward. As far as the type of workout she is referring to - we do an hour long class that is a mix of cardio, circuit, and weight training. I personally eat before I go to class but I have to eat very small amounts to keep from feeling queasy while working out. Best of luck!

I usually eat at least an hour before I work out. I like to let my food settle and not have a chance of coming back up if I have a hard work out. Also gives my body plenty of energy to make it through the wo.

I love to eat a trail mix of raisins and nuts about an hour afterward. I usually do all my exercise between lunch and dinner. (I find that if I do it in the evenings, I have trouble going to sleep.) I have my little snack afterward so I will not eat too much at dinner. Water, water, water....Before, during and after. It flushes all the yuck and lactic acid your muscles produce when exercising and you will not be so sore. Good luck to you! cb

Mostly, you need to decide what works best for you. I usually have a banana or a yogurt before working out....a healthy meal with lean protein after wards.
The current research in the fitness industry points to faster recovery of the muscles if a healthy meal is eaten within 60-90 min. after workout.
So I tell all my clients that...no one has told me it doesn't work for them.

Congrats to you on your commitment to fitness! Keep up the good work!
