Wood Flooring

We are wanting to replace our worn out carpets. We would like to get the engineered wood floors, but we are also wanting to get a dog (lab or golden). We are concerned about the dog, and the kids, scratching the floor. Do any of you have wood floors and dogs? We are not completely against laminate flooring, but I prefer something more natural. Any advice?

What can I do next?

Let me give you another thing to think about before you get the dogs. We have a big dog and he has been fine on our wood floors (real wood) as far as scratching them. HOWEVER, he doesn't walk well on them. He is part golden retriever. Now that he is older, he is having a lot of trouble getting up and down because his feet slide. He also has trouble cutting corners. Also, my in-laws had a dog (smaller, 35 lbs, I don't remember what kind!) and because of the tile/wood floors, he walked funny on the floors (with his back feet turned) and eventually had lots of hip problems due to the floors.

I know lots of people have these floors with dogs, but if I had it to do over, I wouldn't have both because it is really sad to watch your dog try to get up.

Good luck!

About two years ago, we ripped up our carpeting and put down laminate flooring. We were originally going to do real hard wood but after working with Bob (owner of G&W Contract Carpeting...great place to buy, by the way), we decided to go with laminate. He showed us, using a quarter, how the wood floors and even really durable bamboo floors would scratch. We have three in door dogs, 7 kids (including in-laws) and two grandsons and I don't regret the decision at all. Two neighbors did the same and we all ask "why did we wait so long to take up the carpeting and put down these floors??"
Good luck.

Our dog scratched up our wood floors because he couldn't figure out how to walk on them. He's an outside dog now. If you plan on getting a big dog, I'd plan on him staying out side if you want to protect your floors!
