My son is 14mo is showing his independence by refusing baby food and only eatting things he can put in his mouth by himself.... while this is great, I can't control his diet as much anymore. he used to love carrots, bananas, peaches, pears (the list goes on) but won't eat them cut up because they are slimy and he doesn't like the way they feel in his hands! for the most part he eats the veggies and meat i give him, but not fruit!! odd??? :)

he also has fOOd allergies to egg, dairy and peanuts, so i feel like he's already missing out on other nutritional options for snacks and meal times.... HELP!

What can I do next?

Ok...I would refuse baby food at this point also....so as for bananas, carrots, peaches, pears, avacado, anything you eat....to an extent put it in front of him (the safe way...cut up, diced, mashed a little, but so that he can chew, swallow ect...) and let him go to town....just watch him....give him a spoon and fork, and let him feed himself....He is going to get messy, but let him...it is and goes with the process....My daughter loved feeding herself! They will not starve, and will eat it if given the chance to feel like they have some say in what in goes in their mouth....give him whatever you want.....One that my daughter loved was bread sticks with hummus....she could dip it...loves dipping....she is 3 now, and still loves to dip things...LOL

I would suggest giving him a child safe fork/spoon too. I had another suggestion but it flew right out of my head.
i'll add to this if i think of it.

Celeste had some excellent advice. Take it from me--the mom of an almost 6 year old who would STILL prefer to be fed than feed himself :-) --let him "go to town" and get the hang of it himself. I would get him a cute character fork/spoon/dish/bowl/cup set and let him have at it! I always say that I'm going to have to go to the prom as my son's date because I'll have to cut up his food and feed him!
Sounds like he still WILL eat a variety of things so keep offering the other stuff and, most importantly, keep introducing NEW stuff as well. Luckily, my son will eat absolutely anything--it just that getting him to feed himself was quite a chore!
Plus, I,wanted to add that it is completely normal for kids that age to eschew certain foods because of the texture or feel. Next month, he may refuse all breads, etc. It is a phase that will change and pass...
