F.H.
I briefly saw an interview on it, isn't a bunch of girls from the same school? If so, I think they got their hands on a funny synthetic cigarette or pill or something and aren't fessing up. =/
I will post a few links in my SWH.
I saw this story on the Today show, about the HS girls in Northwestern NY suddenly experiencing Tourettes-like symptoms. Tonight on my LOCAL news there was a story about a girl in Corinth NY (close to me) with the same problem.
I wonder what you all think of this story?
I wonder whether this is a more common problem then we KNOW about, but now the media has got ahold of it so it seems BIZARRE to those of us who have not heard of it before.
Is it REALLY that baffling? Is there a logical explaination?
What's your take?

Having trouble finding the local story, will post when I find it

I don't buy the explanation. My first thought is that the girls used some kind of drug that caused the tic. Many stimulants including ADHD medications can cause Tourettes syndrome. Maby they were experimenting with a drug that the neurologist didn't test for???
Very weird, I can't think of any explanation.
I guess we are just going to have to wait to see what happen, but if I was the parent of one of those girl I would be frantic for some answers because is totally not normal, and I doubt coincidence.
Good thing at least it got some media and is being told.
I had read it quickly the other day. It made me think of the girls that were a part of the Salem witch trials when they mentioned mass hysteria.
I think they need to look more closely at these girls and figure out whats going on. I was also reading about how some schools are making kids sick because of mold, dust and things like that. So I would not rule out something in the air, food or person to person contact.
Wild! I grew up only about 20 minutes away from there. It's a cute town - the hometown of Jello, very close to Rochester. I hadn't heard about this - thanks for the link!
EDIT - BTW, some think the Salem witch trials were linked to bad rye bread, infected by a fungus which caused hallucinations. Don't think these girls were eating bad rye, but definitely "food" for thought (ha, ha!).
I just came on Mamapedia specifically to see if anyone had posted about this.
I was just watching it on Today.
I've heard of mass psychogenic illness before, so I do believe that's what it is. That does not mean the symptoms aren't real, though. The brain is a complex thing.
Does anyone know one of the moms of these girls?
alot of adhd meds have not had long term studies done, showing its possible side effects, long term, especially if "accidently"taken with other meds.
more later

think i might have stumbled onto something, the (rye bread) mold that one woman had wrote about, is native to new england, and particularly nasty under the right circumstances( the salem witch trials, for example)and the weather pattern is the same now as it was during the salem witch trials, add some mass hysteria , maybe add some over the
counter meds and volia ,tics
I'm unsettled by the final diagnosis....mass hysteria, right?
Don't agree with it. Find it suspect that the dx was released the day after the Today Show episode.
Can we say conspiracy theory? We need Scully & Mulder!
Is this the story about the parents being upset that the news was hid from them? The only way I know of that parents are not to be told is if it's STD or pregnancy related. Is it possible that their symptoms is linked to an STD? My mother told me about this story earlier in the week.
