Hi moms!!
My son has been walking for a couple of months now, but he is still a very wobbly... he also trips any little thing... for some reason he is not very stable... he will be 15 months soon... but since he has been walking for a good amount of time now i don't understand why?? I started to think that it may be because he is on Soy milk and not cow's milk-I thought maybe he wasn't getting all the nutrients and vitamins? Sounds a little silly... another reason that I had on my mind was that he doesn't eat too many solid foods. At first I was so afraid to give him any solid foods since he would choke-and now I do give him more foods... but a lot of the times he just refuses... any one have similar problems?? Thanks.

I think wobbly at 15 months is normal. (Actually, my daughter was a nearly talker and didn't walk until 15 months.) However, keep in mind that equilibrium is affected by the inner ear. If he's had any congestion/sinus or ear infection issues, this could throw off his balance.

My son started walking ( not crusing ) at 13 months. He was super wobbly till recently. He walks better with no shoes on. We have a slick tile floor and I think he would have started walking better/sooner if we had carpet. Since he is new to this I would give him more time. I just noticed our son is running around and seems to be walking steady now. Although threw grass and sometimes on the side walks he still falls alot. He is not a year and a half. At your next doctors appointment ask them if his walking seems normal. They will renforce that everything seems ok. Which I think it does. Good luck.

hi there,

I don't wan tto scare you but it sounds like he may have a vitamin c deficiency. Have him checked ou tat your doctors office. I have heard of a child who could walk and then stopped walking because he only ate oatmeal and milk. No other foods.

It may be as simple as adding some OJ every day.

Hope this helps

Be sure to let him run around barefoot. Also see if you can find some more slender diapers.. The diaper can be really wide between the legs and make it difficult to walk and run.

It is not unusual for him to be wobbly, especially the faster he is trying to move. If you are really concerned, take him to the doctor to make sure his eye sight, and hearing are normal. This can cause some unbalance.

It's probably normal, but can't hurt to get checked out. My daughter was still wobbly at after walking for 9 months. Got referred to an orthopedist and she was diagnosed with a genetic form of rickets. Not to worry you - her case is extremely rare - but you may as well rule out anything serious first. Talk to your pediatrician.

I think that is normal, but you might want to take him to a playground, maybe an indoor mall, and let him try to climb on play equipment. That will develope their gross motor skils (large muscles) and help with walking, running, balancing, etc.

Hi :) my daughter was a bit wobbly for the first 2 or 3 months she was walking and I realized it was the shoes- she was totally uncomfortable so I went to stride rite got her fitted with some great sneakers and sandals and bam! Now shes a great walker . I woulnd worry about the food and vitamins etc.. your prolly doing way better than you think- all kids are super picky eaters.. maybe just try some good sneakers and see how he does hope that helps :)

Hi J., You might try taking him to the eye dr. Our daughter was that way and someone suggested that we take her to the dr and sure enough she needed glasses. She was wobbly and ran into things alot but she did great after that cause she could see where she was going.

This is not to sound any alarms...my 4th child was a wobbly walker but there are other symptoms that go along with that to indicate sensory processing disorder. She has the vestibular and proprioceptor type, where the child doesn't know where his body is in space. Her nerves were sending the signals to her brain but her brain wasn't reading them. She is very clumsy and runs into things. She would constantly choke on her food, too, because she couldn't "feel" how much food she had put in her mouth and properly chew it. She would stuff her mouth so full that she couldn't close it. I don't know if that is your son's issues with food. I found that if I only gave her a small amount on her plate at a time, she wouldn't gag as often.
A symptom of SPD is low muscle tone, which my pedi picked up early on. She has been in therapy for a year, which is really just play on a different level, to keep her from injuring herself. She hasn't been able to figure out how to catch herself with her hands and to use her feet to step off things. It's like she can't figure out what to do with her appendages.
Hopefully, your son doesn't have SPD, but even if he does, it isn't the end of the world, maybe just the end of a major league sports career. But I would look it up on the internet and see if he has any additional symptoms.

My son is 13 months old and has been walking since he was 9 months old and he falls down all the time. I think he is just in such a hurry that he doesn't pay attention (i.e. he isn't a very cautious walker!). He can almost run now, but because he just goes for it and doesn't think much about it, he still falls a lot. When he slows down a bit, you can tell that he is very stable on his feet, but he's so tiny still that it is no wonder he just can't keep himself upright half the time! I wouldn't worry about it. Toddlers toddle (and fall down). He'll get the hang of it soon enough and then you won't be able to keep up with him. I can almost assure you that the milk and food have absolutely nothing to do with it, but if you're still concerned, check with his pediatrician or a nutritionist. Babies need very little in the way of nutrition since they are so small and you would be surprised at the sources for some of the nutrients that they get. I was just reading up on this tonight in a childhood development book since my son is also a very picky eater. Try to relax and just keep him away from any danger when he's walking around (easier said than done as I just had to take my son to the ER the other day because he fell and hit his head just walking! He has a blood disorder that keeps his blood from clotting and he had to have a CT scan to check for internal bleeding). It can be scary, but we can't keep them in a bubble either. Good luck to you! I hope this was helpful.
