Wisdom for Our Daughters - Spinoff of Melissas Post

Melissas post about rules for boys is spot on. I have been looking for some little nugget of wisdom I can give my daughters that will grow with them and they can pick back up over thier lifetime and continue getting something from it. For instance, my teenager loves Audrey Hepburn. We have watched My Fair Lady and Breakfast At Tiffanys many times over the years and it always seems to teach us something new. Timeless and Universal.

So, I have been looking for a good old fashioned book for my daughter. Something she can dog ear the pages. That will yellow over time and be a touchstone for her, long after I'm gone. I went on Amazon and bought a few books that looked promising - "What I know now: Letters to My Younger Self " and "Things I Want My Daughters to Know: A Small Book About The Big Issues In Life" Both were terrible. Not what I thought they would be. Certainly dont live up to thier names! I ended up giving her Maya Angelous Poems and her book - "Letters To My Daughter" I found far more wisdom in those books over the yrs. Can You reccomend any other jewels of female wisdom?

I have a letter or series of letters I am writing my daughter. Mostly about who she is now as a little girl. But there are many things in there that I at the right time can bring her information.

I would really have to go back a read the letter(s) to pull things out.

One thing I do want her to know is that "You are not me, you are you're own individual, a remarkable young woman with massive amounts of determination, don't ever let your need to accomplish something go. Does not matter what the task is."...I have never known anyone who has the determination this girl does. I encourage her and show her how to focus it on the right things.

I came across this a few weeks ago, and I thought it was fabulous. And I have a 4 year old daughter myself, so I hope as she gets older, this will be something I can pass on to her. :) It's not a book, but it really rings true (at least for me).

The book "Wings of Silver" by Jo Petty.
My late Dad gave me this as a child. As a daughter.
And he wrote a special note to me, inside the book cover.
I have treasured it always, especially after he died.
My book is dog eared and yellowed and tagged with bookmarks and so very well used.

I don't know if the book is still in print.
But you can search for it. Amazon, or perhaps Barnes and Noble, Ebay, etc.

This is it:

This is the one I have.

I still have my book from my Dad.
I will give it to my daughter, as well.
