Hi, I have stayed at the Wilderness Lodge off peak and loved it. My kids are young, 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 and we are looking at going to the Dells during the summer this time. Because the rates are so high during the summer months, we want to stay at a smaller, more economical hotel, but I am a little afraid of the grossness factor. Trip advisor gives such conflicting reviews depending upon how picky some people are. If you have been there recently, please let me know which ones are clean!! Thank you :)
Have you thought about a campground? We go to Sherwood Forest and I hear they have big changes in plan for this summer! They do rent cabin like houses too. It is within walking distance to town which is nice. Good luck!
We stayed at the meadowbrook resort one summer and I highly recommend it for a family with young kids. It's on a gorgeous quiet property, nice rooms and reasonable. Small pool, playground and water play area great for little kids.

we stayed at the rain tree last summer and thought it was great. it's a smaller water park geared for smaller kids!!!
