Window Tinting/Covering

Hello, I am thinking about putting up a window tint in my son's bedroom. His room is on the east side of our house and during the summer his room gets really warm, it is also hard for him to sleep late because of the bright sunshine. Is it worth the expense and what sounds like very frustrating application for the DIY widow tinting? Does anyone have other suggestions? It does need to look OK from the outside because this window is on the front of our house.

Thanks

We used window shades. It looks just like a regular screen but it shades better. We called a company and they hand-made it to fit our window right on the spot. I don't remember it being really expensive or anything. We did all our windows on the south side of our house...

Hi M.,

If you are looking for an affordable fix, go to Wal-mart. I know some people have boycotted that place, but for saving money, I think it is great.

Anyway, they sell room darkening shades that you can adjust the size to, so it fits any window perfectly. The instructions are very simple and they work wonders!! It should probably only cost you about $8-$10 a shade. They do the same thing as the custom ordered/made shades for a fraction of the cost.

For something else affordable, try the shades that you buy for car windows. You can buy a theme to match the room, but they may look kinda funny from the outside...

I wouldn't go with the tint unless they are extremely easy to remove - not a selling feature if you are looking to sell anytime down the road...

Good luck,
L.

Not sure where we got them but we have UV protective blinds in all our windows. They are all in white but Im sure if you can find them they will be offered in other colors. We also just keep our curtains closed during the day to help keep the sun out and the house a bit cooler
Good Luck

We had the film put on our windows.

There are several different grades of window film you can choose from. All of them block heat, but not all of them block light.

We got: clear heat-blocking-shatterproof for the sidelight windows near our front door; clear heat-blocking basic film for our bedroom; medium-grade tinted for our kitchen.

There are also privacy tints that are reflective (but they only work for privacy during the day - think office buildings where you can see right in lit rooms at night), and the different grades of tint have slightly different colors, so depending on how dark you get, you wouldn't necessarily have to tint all the windows on the front of the house.

I would have it installed. We have both gone the route of DIY, and having it installed. Installation is worth it.

A lot of folks also seem to like blackout curtains or shades. Not really an option for us because I really prefer the inflow of natural light (we don't sleep terribly late here!), and because my kids and DH have dust mite allergies, and I don't want to wash or clean any more extra window treatments than I have to.

yes! There is mathematical equation but the investment will pay you back in energy cost savings. Plus it will make you more comfortable. I can hook you up with an installer or call Ken at Cool Shades.
