I have a friend who has a 2 year old has a Wilms Tumor on his kidney and has spread to his lungs is stage 4. Is there anyone out there who has had a child or has known of a child with this and if so can you walk me through what to expect so that i may better help my friend. thank you all so much.

Well...not sure how helpful this will be since it was so long ago, but my brother was diagnosed with Wilms just before his 4th birthday (in 1984) and from what I remember Wilms is considered to one of the more "survivable" forms of childhood cancer. My brother went through surgery, 15 months of chemotherapy and then after a year of monitoring relapsed and had to have another surgery. He made it through all of that and is alive and well. If you want more information I believe the NIH website has quite a few resources online for information about various forms of cancer.

Hey I just did a quick Google search and the Wikipedia entry states that even with Stage IV cancer the 4 year survival rate is 90% if the tumor is not anaplastic. If the tumor is anaplastic the 4 year survival rate is only 17%. So, depending on the tumor, the prognosis could still be pretty good. There is certainly a support group around for parents with kids with cancer; encourage your friend to go. There may even be a Wilms tumor group.
