I think 3 months old is too little to start rice cereal. My boy was the same way, eat like a horse and always seemed hungry. I tried giving rice cereal at 2 1/2 months and it made it worse. He's digestive system wasnt ready for it so we had more problems instead of a solution. My advice... WAIT until he is at least 4 months old. try giving her soy milk, it work with my boy's digestive problems and he calmed down a lot after that. Hope this helps

Dear J.,

If your daughter is sleeping so well, which is the sign of a satisfied baby, why would you want to change anything? I am jealous. My daughter did not sleep so well until close to a year in age.

So, if you were to ask me, I would say don't change anything. She is not fussy, eats well and most of all, sleeps well. You are blessed!

The pediatric recommendations are to wait until 6 mos. old. Maybe you need to try a different formula. If she were still hungry, then the pacifier probaby wouldn't help. Giver your pediatrician all the information you gave us and see what the doc. says.

My son was like that too, always seemed hungry. He was diagnosed with acid reflux at 2 months. I was surprised becasue he wasn't a big vomitter just a big eater, and that was because it made him feel better. I started giving my son rice cereal at 2 months 9against the advice of my pediatrician), but not before bed, I did it during the day to help with the reflux. He had no problem with the cereal. I didnt start other foods until about 4 months. I also was only giving him 4 oz servings until about 4 or 5 months. It sounds like 6 may be too much and if she is spitting it up it can irritate the esophogus. Best bet is to talk to pediatrician.
Best of luck

It sounds to me like you might be giving her way too much formula. Especially if she is spitting it up. Our baby at 4 months was only taking about 4 ounces. I'm just thinking if she is spitting about 1/2 of it then her belly is just too full.Maybe she has a tummy ache. Years ago cereal was recommended early for babies, but all the studies now show much later like 6 months. If she is sleeping through the night and doesn't cry then that makes me think she might just be full. your lucky to have a 3 month sleep that long. Could she just be too full when she spits up? Ask a lactation consultant how much does she recommend. They are usually aware of how much babies eat. I find they always give great advise for breastfed and formula babies. They are aware of babies feedings more than dr.'s. Good luck

My son was diagnosed with gastronomical reflux when he was about 6 weeks. so his doctor told me to give him rice cereal and/or put him on Enfamil A.R. Lipil because it had rice cereal in it already. I used the formula and it helped a lot with his sleeping because it filled him up. About a month later i started to put cereal in his bottles because he wouldnt stay full. My son's doctor also said that if he is hungry not to worry because he will cry. I hope this helps some.

J.,
all of the research and pediatricians that i have encountered since i have had kids points to the answer of NO. but if you feel strongly about this talk to your pediatrician first and see what they think. this subject is widely debated but current research states it does more harm than good.

J. i believe two and a half month old even 3 month old baby is to early to be fed cereal (digestive problems etc). my daughters were on formula until about 5 months and then i introduced cereal and their weight has been great. don't hurry to introduce new foods to get her to sleep through the night. my opinion is it's too early

IF SHE'S HUNGRY FEED HER. I THINK YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO GIVE CEREAL AT 4 MONTHS... BUT IT WON’T KILL HER TO GIVE IT NOW. I STARTED CEREAL WITH MINE JUST COMING UP ON 4 MONTHS. I THINK YOU START STAGE ONE FOODS TOO... SO MAYBE THAT WILL HELP WITH HER BEING HUNGRY. ALWAYS CALL THE DOCTOR IF NOTHING HELPS!

WOW! Good for you on such a healthy child and such great sleeping habits already.
I would ask your pediatrician what he/she recommends about the formula. I know all the "experts" say no way until 4 months, but I know a lot of folks who started cereal earlier, particularly because of big babies or babies who just didn't get full. Good luck and best wishes.

You might want to start with a tablespoon or rice cereal in the milk to start and see how that works. Then add maybe another tablespoon or change to oatmeal cereal.

From what I remember 6 oz. of formula is too much for a 3 month old. That is definitely why she is spitting up. I had that problem with my daughter because I was overfeeding her formula. I asked the doctor why she was spitting up because I just kept upping her formula ouces because she seemed hungry. He said I was giving her too much and when I took her down a few ounces, she stopped spitting up and she wasn't hungry for more. I'd talk to your pediatrician.

And I think 3 months is too young for cereal. Oh and I read and was told to never put cereal in the bottle. It contributes to juvenile diabetes.

Hi, My first daughter was 10lbs 4oz when she was born. I HAD to start her on cereal ealy. Bottles were just not doing it for her, she was always hungry. I started mixing some rice cereal in her bottle to thicken it up. I had to cut a little bigger hole in the nipple so it would flow, but it did the trick. After she was about 4 months old, I started to add a little bit of fruits to the mixture in the bottle as well. She really enjoyed having some flavor in there too. Good luck!

I would talk to your pediatrician before you do anything..but I did start introducing baby food to my daughter around 3 months..I started her with pears(I just would put it on the tip of a baby spoon and let her taste it) and a bit of cereal in her formula. by 6 months she was eating stage 2 foods..

I started my second daughter on ceral at night at 2 months. I wouldn't change completely to solid food. But ceral in her bottle at night and before a nap will help your daughter sleep better.

Lots of luck

I have some friends who were told to add cerel to the formula when the babies were just born because they weren't getting enough food (only a day or 2 old). They would cry right after they ate because they were still hungry from the start, the bottle didn't even fill them up for 3 hrs. If she is feeding every 3 hrs and sleeping 7 hrs at night I would assume she is getting enough food and wouldn't add cerel until she is a little bit older. My daughter was eating every 2-3 hrs until she was 6 mths old including at night (boy would I have loved the 7hr night stretch you have at 3mths). My doctor told me she was growing fine and getting enough food so I didn't supplyment anything. If you are really concerned then I would consult your doctor to be sure but if she is growing good according to the growth chart then it is perfectly normal for her to eat every 3 hrs at 3 mths old. I don't believe in rushing kids along, they have plenty of time to eat regular feed and they grow up fast enough as it is.

Usually a baby's digestive system is not ready for anything but mom's milk until (6) months. There is organic brown rice cereal at Wild Oats or Health Stores maybe a very tiny bit mixed with breast milk and/or formula would do the trick. Talk to your pediatrician and make a mindful choice yourself but at this age, less is better, they won't starve...
Good luck.

Hi J.,

My son had acid reflux and had similar symptoms. He would act so hungry and then eat too much and spit it up. The act of eating soothed the acid but was actually making the problem worse. .I would wait on the cereal like some of the other moms suggested it could make things worse. Talk to your pediatrician and tell them everything, even if it doesn't seem related to eating (crying at certain time of the day, etc) and I wish you best of luck. It's hard to figure out these little rubix cubes!
