A.S.
they are growing from the excessive rain we've been having. They should go away when the ground dries out.
This is a two part question. The first question is: do any of you know if the mushrooms that grow wild in your backyard are poisonous? We have a new puppy, and I'm not sure if she is going to try to eat them or not. I am trying to pick them out as I see them so that she doesn't have the chance to eat them. The problem is that she loves to be outside and eat the grass and sticks and rocks and anything else that she can get a hold of.
The second question is: What causes these wild mushrooms to grow in my yard and how can I prevent it?

Hi R.!
I just asked my vet the same questions since our newest pup has been chewing on them lately! He said that the ones that come off of a tree and grow out are ok (thankfully this is what we have) but the ones with caps on them are not. My hubby did notice a small bunch of the cap ones a few weeks ago in our outter yard and used a weed killer on them. So far they have not grown back that he has noticed.
Good luck keeping your puppy safe! Blessings!
Yes they can be poisonous if to many are injected. Part would depend on the size of your dog. Many times it will not be a problem with larger dogs but I wold be more carefully with smaller dogs.
Mushrooms are like a fungus there grow in areas that damp and shaded. We have had so much rain lately a lot of yards are getting them in the shaded areas. The damper your yard the more you will have. Not to much you can do beside check the yard daily and remove any mushrooms you see but remember wear gloves and wash you hands after.
Good Luck
I'm not sure about dogs, but poison control claims most wild mushrooms in northwest illinois are not poisonous to humans. Of course, I wouldn't take any chances. :)
I have the same things growing in my yard. Let me know what responses you get.
actually the puppy may be helping them sprout, I've noticed that there are a lot of sprouted mushrooms in dog walking areas
We have this problem this year too! I asked my mom who is a master gardener, and the only thing to do is pick them by hand with gloves and wash your hands well afterwards. I have a 2 year old who loves mushrooms, the edible kind, and am hoping she doesn't get brave and try one. They are poisonous and go to the ER if swallowed, I would think for a dog too! I do daily walks through the yard looking for them! As my kids play outside almost daily! Hope that helps.
