Wierd Quick Movements

I am 34 weeks pregnant and of course I forgot to ask my doc this question. Sometimes I feel jerky/quick like movements. The best way I know how to describe them would to say it feels like he is having a seizure or something. They are NOT hiccups. He has those too...those are regular little thumps that last a couple of minutes. This is like a quick 3 second shake...what could it be?!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you so much for all of the reassuring responses! I greatly appreciate them! I go in next week for a check up. I'm sure it is nothing as you all have said but I WILL remember to ask and I'll post what I find out as well! Thanks again!

My baby did the same thing when I was pregnant, and he's 10 months old now and totally normal. I think its just thier nervous system developing, at least thats what i read when i was looking up the same thing when i was pregnant. They get the same 3 second spasms in thier legs sometimes too, after they are born.

probably what everyone else said. here's a thought because it's interesting though. Have you ever tensed your leg just right to where it spasms, and maybe said "look at this, my legs are shaking!" ? Maybe your baby is doing the same thing, like "hmm, that feels different.."

I had 5 kids and don't remember anything of that exact nature, although its been a while! I would say you should call your Dr's office first thing Monday morning and talk to at least his nurse. My impression is that if it doesn't feel or seem right then "trust your gut" so to speak. I sure wouldn't panic or anything but just be cautious, and don't let the Dr's office "blow you off" either! There was a lot of epilepsy in my husbands family and I am not sure if that kind of thing goes on in the womb? Have you done a search on the net for the symptoms etc? I do know that magnesium is very important for avoiding and helping that possibility and wonder if you are getting enough as they always tell us to take calcium but forget to mention that mag should be balanced with it also. Things like greens are high in mag.......but in our family I always made sure the kids had cal AND mag and we didn't have problems...helped the hyper ones too as mag is nerve calmer! God Bless!

Hi L. - my 2nd did that too and he is perfect in every way. As someone else posted, a baby's little nervous system is still developing and they sometimes will shiver like that. Even newborns will do it.

Call your OB's office if it really concerns you -

congratulations on your new addition!

I have heard of babies having seizures in utero, but I have no idea what that would feel like. Babies have a lot of funny movements--neither of my kids moved the same way when I was carrying them, so maybe he just has different movements from your other two previous babies? It may be nothing, but call your doctor if you are worried.

My baby did the exact same thing it sounds. I even described it like a seizure. My entire stomach would shake in that area. When my baby was born almost 5 weeks ago we found out what it was.... We call it his shaky legs. Every once in a while he just pulls his legs up and they both shake. So I am sure it is completely normal.
Congrats and best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I had the same movements and I wear the baby was having a seizure, but the Dr assured me, that yes, they are hiccups. And they feel like seizures sometimes instead of hiccups. I guess there could always be a chance it is a seizure, but that's what he told me.

Hi!
I experienced the same thing with my boys. I'm an OB physician and I think it's just movement resulting from their immature neurologic system. I didn't worry about it and my boys are fine. Hope this helps!

With my last pregnancy, I felt the same thing (I just gave birth 2 weeks ago). I wouldn't worry. I never even thought to say anything to the Dr. I just assumed it was normal. Anyway, the little man came out as healthy as can be - no problems whatsoever. I slightly remember that with my daughter as well. I do think it's normal. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

L., We're traveling along at just the same amount of speed there! I'm due on April 12th, so I'm 34 wks today. I've been feeling the same completely spastic movements too. Oh to have a little window to open and just peek!! I don't know what it is, but I can imagine that being stuffed in the tiny space that I call my uterus wouldn't be very fun, and I tend to want to be a little spastic myself at times. Normally when I've been confined to sitting or lying around for a while. I'd rather just jump around for a minute!! I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Good luck! With EVERYTHING!!!

Hi L.,
Congrats on baby!!! From my own experience of each of my 7 pregnancies there have always been thhose times where baby has the quick jerky movements. It is normal just like when baby is out & sleeping or such & they do that quick scissor kick with their legs & such. Each one of my baby's moved differently, some more active than others, some got hiccups & others did not.

But you are momma & you know what feels right & what does not if you have ANY concern please let your doctor know. Your safety & baby's is top priority. Take care, G.

My baby did the same thing. I asked my dr. if she was okay in these spaz moments. He said that she was fine...and she was. I don't know why baby does it...maybe it gets so cramped in there that he just needs to stretch everything really fast :) Don't worry, though. Talk to your dr. at your next apointment if you still need some reassurance, but until then, just enjoy these last few weeks of special time with baby in the belly :)
