so moms, we got our tax return this morning, and as usual it is quite a chunk, more money than we are used to having. in past years we have paid for vacations, bought appliances, etc.

this year we are doing dave ramsey and have several hospital bills (which are all embarrassingly past due) we are paying off. i should be thrilled.

i am so freaking out over having to call these people i almost had a panic attack! what the heck! all i can figure out is that i am SO terrified of talking to these people that the thought of it, combined with the euphoria of having such a huge chunk of money, is just too much.

my task today while at work is to call about 6 of these people. my husband and i have a plan, i know who i am calling, and what i'm paying each, etc. i'm just so unsettled by this, it's wierd. am i crazy? could it really just be embarrassment? anyone else have this reaction to doing the right thing? i know it is, i just don't know why i'm freaking out about it! maybe my debt is kind of a security blanket and i'm actually scared to be without it? illogical but possible? argh! i have to do this!

So What Happened?

aww you guys are so right! i don't know what my problem is - i got it done bright and early this morning, bit the bullet and did the right thing, and i was fine....then i spent most of the rest of the day feeling like i'd forgotten something and the other shoe was about to fall lol. i am slowly trying to tell myself that i am in SO much better shape now....it will take awhile to get used to feeling "responsible" lol.

i think part of my panic was that i was told my return wouldn't be here for a couple more weeks, so i was mentally not prepared to do it like RIGHT THEN lol.

well thank you all again...we are getting there. something i didn't mention (because i didn't know how much places would be willing to take as minimum payments) was that one of our loans was from my grandma (ooooh such a bad idea!!) i am proud to say we were able to put that in the "paid completely off" pile today. i will NEVER borrow money from family again...ugh! worst out of the whole lot! (and she's a saint, she'd never say a word about it, but it drove me crazy knowing i owed her that). thanks again ladies. i made it!

These debt collectors call people all day, get excuses as to why they can't pay, get hung up on and called names.

You're going to call them, give them money, say thank you and hang up.

You'll probably be one of the best calls they have all day! Be happy that you can make a bill collector's day!

(On a side note, I think it's just embarrassment that is making you nervous. You have no reason to be embarrassed. You've told us about not having paid your bills...and we don't hear about this everyday...whereas the bill collectors do.)

Look at it this way.... you are calling someone who sits and answers phones (or calls people about their bills) who makes minimum wage probably and is just doing his/her job. The person you're calling probably doesn't really care much about your situation. They'll take your information and your money and that will be it. They'll move on to the next call. You are just one small call in their day.

Don't let people like that have power over you. You don't owe them personally any money. They are just doing a job.

I don't know why you're feeling anxiety, but wanted to send a big "Woot-Woot" for paying off that debt!

Don't you hate that Nike ad that says "Just do it!"

They will be happy to get the money and you will have the burden off.
I would call asap and get it over with.

When you get debt free, it is worth it. Don't quit if like us, you run up more medical bills. Just keep making payments.

I spent ten years paying off my student loans and doing without. I got a lot of teasing from others who made fun of my flinstone car(there was a 12 inch hole in the floor, dents, rust, etc..). I lost friends because we didn't want to spend money and quit giving gifts except to kids in our immediate family. Now I am making new friends, many are debt free and have no problem with us "eating in" instead of out.

Look at it this way: If you don't pay them, you'll end up in collections, credit ruined, and you'll probably get sued. I think it's easier to just call them and set up payment arrangements now as opposed to having to face those other consequences. I would definitely journal each call: date, time, who you spoke with, and what the payment arrangement is. Time will fly by and before you know it, these debts will be paid off.
