Hello. I know this is a common concern for us mommies. My 7 month old dd has been eating solids for over a month now and is enjoying it. My now 30 month old had constipation problems as well and i have been giving her flaxseed in her yogurt since she turned 1 and that works for her. I was trying to give my 7 month old all the right foods so i would not have to give her flaxseed. I give her oatmeal and whole wheat cereal, prunes, pears , peas.....all the foods that have more fiber. She is not going. After 6 days i gave her a suppository and she went a little. Now it has been 3-4 days and no more poop. She has been EBF until we started solids. For the past 3-4 days i have added the flaxseed but still no poop. I bought some apple/prune juice but she has yet to really drink any of it. Any advice? TIA

What can I do next?

Is it that she just does not have any poop or she is trying but just cannot go? If she is trying, she may just need some help. Our ped told us that babies do not always "know" how to use all of their body parts (especially that one). She may just need some stimulation to help her learn how to appropriately use that particular body part. Please consult your ped first, but ours told us we could put petroleum jelly on a cotton swab, gently rub around & just inside the rectum. If it comes out "dirty", the potty is definitely there, she just may not know how to relax those muscles when she is pushing. You can help her by massaging that area with a lubricated pinky finger & doing bicycle motions with her legs. Our DD1 had this problem & did not fully know how to potty until she was about 14 mos old. She's right as rain now & we know how to help her sister should she need it.

Again though- I'm not a medical professional so please consult your ped first.

Good luck and hope this helps!! :-)

HI M.,

Is she getting enough water? EBFing gives babies their fluids but when solids are introduced, water needs to be added (distilled with no chlorine or fluoride). Prune juice should help. I had to give my little one 4 oz a day and she stayed regular until her bowels adjusted. It's so sweet she never turned her nose up to it. Since she has been EBF, La Leche may be able to help if this doesn't help.

God bless,

M.

Hello M.,

Hi M.,

Spinach is what helped my second daughter have regular bowel movements after I quit nursing her at 5 months. It became one of her favorite foods! And if you can get her to drink water, that will help as well.

Best wishes to you and your family!

Mix the juice in with her cereal if she's eating that,
Stop giving your 30 month old flaxseed, it has natural estrogen in it and could throw her into early puberty.
