Why Does My 1 1/2 Year Old Have a Constant Rash?

At the beginning of this summer my son developed a rash all over his body. I took him to the doctor's where they told me a list of things it could be and told me a list of ways to treat it which none worked. The rash isn't as bad as it was during the summer but it hasnt gone away. He itches his skin constantly which turns his rash into scabs, his skin feels dry and rough all the time and lotion doesnt seem to help that either. Please help me figure out what is going on with him!

Forgot to post that he was treated for eczema and was on steriod cream, and was tested for allergies which came back good!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all thank you all for the comments. I have tried fragrance free laundry soap, softener, and I use the extra rinse cycle. He has had a blood allergy test done that came back negative for any allergies. I have tried a line of different lotions and creams. I have tried everything that everyone has been saying but nothing seems to be helping, the only thing I havent done was take him to a dermatologist which is my next step! Once again thank you all and I hope something helps soon

Hm could it be detergent, Soap or water, Maybe hes allergic to water. Did you see a dermatologist? If so you need to go to another one who cares and find out whats going on. It sounds like eczema. Try organic stuff. I know a lady who make all organic lotion and stuff. Email me though here I can give you her number. Other than that I don;t know maybe something he eats too. Good luck

First, I urge you make a follow up appointment with the doctor. Finding the cause of the rash is a matter of trial and error. The information that what he suggested didn't help, gives the doctor more info with which to work.

I also suggest that it sounds like eczema. However, only the doctor can tell you that for sure. In the mean time keep his skin moisturized. A daily bath after which you slather his skin with a thick emollient cream. Keep his skin moist by using the cream again later in the day. Your doctor may have recommended some creams. Eucerin is a good one. Walgreens has a house brand that's just as good. We used vaseline on my granddaughter when she was that age. Rub it in good while he's still damp from the bath.

Your son may be allergic to some food, pollen, animal dander, dust, etc. The next step might be to have him tested for allergies. My granddaughter has been taking a prescription anti-histamine since she was a baby for allergies. Allergies and eczema go together. She also has asthma which can be a part of the allergies and eczema but doesn't have to be.

You can take your son to a pediatric allergist. They specialize in eczema as well as other skin conditions.

Later: You said he was treated for eczema. Why don't you think it's eczema? Eczema cannot be cured; only controlled and with difficulty for many. The fact that he still has the rash, suggests to me that you haven't found the right combination in treating it. I urge you to take him to a pediatric allergist or dermatologist.

And he can be allergic to detergents, fabrics, etc. which cannot be diagnosed thru testing.

HI A.,
I hope that you have considered the possibility that it could be a reaction to laundry detergent. Unfortunately most laundry products are cheap petro-chemicals mixtures- even if it says no dyes, no fragrance, it is still a chemical soup. Just this morning a customer of mine told me his daughter no longer has eczema after they switched to Shaklee Freshlaundry, which is plant based, natural and works really well. I have many customers that have had itching and skin problems clear up after they switch to Shaklee products- the original green company since 1956! A forensic scientist in New Zealand says NEVER use detergents and fabric softeners on children's clothing- they interact to leave a nitrogen salt coating that builds up in the fabric and feeds bacteria and fungus. With Shaklee products, it will not leave a chemical coating on your clothing, it will not stink in your washing machine, it will not corrode the metal, and your family will have less B.O.! I hope this is helpful- we are surrounding our families with chemicals and their health is suffering. Contact me if you have questions. Be Green and Healthy! M.

Did he get a blood test for allergies? Or was it the "skin scratch"? Sometimes the skin scratch won't detect all allergies. Further, it may not be allergies but he may just have a food sensitivity (much less severe than a full blown allergy). My son developed "baby acne" a few weeks after he was born and it honestly did not go away for his entire first year of life. I did some reasearch and found that some babies can get this reaction from dairy. His pediatrician wasn't too concerned but was OK with me trying a diet change. So I switched him to almond milk about a month ago and have kept most other dairy out of his diet and it has helped a lot. It hasn't been that difficult of a thing to switch (another poster recommended removing gluten (wheat) from your son's diet which also may help - but I would start with dairy as I've found it to be easier to remove).

Good morning! Well, it's great that it's not allergies. It may be the wash that he is using in the bath. There are a lot of harsh chemicals in products on the market. When I was a kid, every time that I would take a shower, I would get super itchy and get these hive-like symptoms. I found out that I am super sensitive and couldn't use the soap I was using (or a number of other products- I have to use a special laundry detergent, toothpaste etc.). My kids have I started using Arbonne products years ago and now have an Arbonne business. If you like, the baby line is great, if you like I can send you a sample in the mail to try on you son. Have a wonderful day. Take care. Talk to you soon! *C.

I would eliminate all gluten in his diet and see if that helps... you need to give it time for what is in his system to get out and then time for his body to heal if this were the problem. I suggest it because my daughter had the same thing, and it disappeared with the disappearance of all gluten in her diet. We also eliminated dairy and that helped as well. But start with wheat and later do dairy so you know what helped and what didn't.

The tests for allergies came back good? Does that mean that he was not found to have any allergies for the things that they tested for?

My sons have food allergies, environmental allergies, as well as sensitivities to the fragrances and perfumes in lotions, soaps, and detergents.

After the food allergies were diagnosed we still saw the bad eczema until we started buying fragrance free/dye free detergents, soaps, and lotions.

Eczema to the best of my knowledge, is a sign that something is still going on allergy/sensitivity wise. If you've ruled our allergies/food allergies with an allergist (this is important as the good ones are more through), then maybe it's the dyes/fragrances.

As others have mentioned, have you tried changing his soap? Laundry detergent? Try to think back to when it started, had you changed some household product brand that he comes into contact with at that time?
I have frequent reactions to makeup, soap, laundry chemicals, etc. and have to stick with simple ones -

He could be allergic to the laundry soap or fabric softener you use or it's not all rinsing out of the clothes. Powered soap also does not always disolve and can cause problems.
I have to use fragrance free, liquid soap and use half the recommended amount or there abouts. I use white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser of the washer. I use tennis balls in the dryer.
If I use anything else, I and several members of my family all break out like that.
It's a thought.
Best of luck!

I agree with many of the answers below- it sounds as tho your son is having either an allergy or a sensitivity to something. Laundry detergent, soap, or fabric softner. Have you looked into making your home toxin free, or at least removing known irritants/toxins? I was able to do this, and I am happy to say I am allergy free for the past few months! I also was able to find a cream that is 7x's more effective then Eucerin for Dry skin and eczema! Msg me if you want more details!

Try Renew lotion. It won't tell you what it is but it may help treat it.

You may want to see another doctor. He could be allergic to something or he may have eczema (dry skin). All my kids have eczema, my youngest has it the worse. He has to have a steroid cream when he has bad rashes on him. His skin will start to peel off, looks so bad, and I'm always thinking it's something else, but no, eczema.
