Why Are You Dieting?

I'm starting a diet called Game On. It's about better choices and being healthy in mind, body, and spirit. It's not some stupid fad diet. In it you are reinforced for eating veggies, lean meats, etc. and for getting 20 minutes of exercise per day, getting more sleep, etc.

So... I have told some of my friends about it and I continue to get the same question. Why are you dieting? I may have have healthy body mass index, but I could lose 15 pounds and still have an average BMI. Not to mention that I need to begin to make healthier choices. I also have been running for about 9 months and I would like to see how I can get my body to perform when I am putting good, healthy food inside. Food is fuel. I still have a bit of my baby pouch and considering my son is 6 the I had a baby excuse is a bit old!!!

Anyway... I am already SO tired of getting asked, "Why are you dieting?" I could ramble off everything I just said in the above paragraph. I just hate that just b/c I'm not obese I have to justify my choice to healthier living. Maybe I'm being defensive here, but any thoughts on something short and sweet to say when people ask me why I'm dieting?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You mamas have some good points!!! I think I may just quit referring to it as a diet! I could refer to it as Game On, a healthy living plan. Sometimes the simplest answer is right on the tip of you nose. Good thoughts Mamas!!!

I have the same thing, people say why you are so skinny already. ok, really I am not and per my Dr. could stand to lose 15-20 lbs to be in healthy range. i used to be more lean muscle and am losing that so I FEEL flabby.

Just call it changing to a healthy lifestyle not a diet....that's really what it is. getting back to eating and getting moderate exercise like we are meant to.

Good for you!

Why are you dieting? = is definitely a compliment, meaning...."You don't need to lose weight."

Have you seen this T-Shirt:

"Dear Lord, If you can't make me skinny, please make my friends fat."

I bet it's slightly heavier woman asking?

Don't call it a diet. Most people think of diets as an extreme change in lifestyle for an extreme and quick result. Your "diet" does not in any way sound like the typical "diet". It sounds like a way of life...it sounds like what everyone SHOULD be doing anyway.

You are doing great!! Keep it up!! Maybe if you change the way you talk about it then you wouldn't get flack from people. You are already looking healthy and exercising so people don't understand your "diet" talk.

Good luck and best wishes...Game On!!!

Just say, "Im not dieting, Im just trying to be healthier"

People do act annoyed when you are concerned about the things you put in your mouth, because they dont have the disipline to do it themselves. Its not about you when you get negativity about it, its about them.

Good job trying to be healthier!!

First, I think it's a compliment.

Second, why would you need to TELL THEM ALL in the first place I wonder? You make it their business by bringing it up, so of course they are free to say what they will.

Most people don't understand that a "diet" IS WHATEVER YOU ARE EATING ON A REGULAR BASIS.

Weightlifters are on diets, as are athletes of the more mobile sort (often being 10,000+ calories a day).

Anorexics (active or rec from) are on diets.

People trying to lose weight, gain weight, get healthier, combat certain physical issues (diabetes, vitamin A intollerance), vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, kosher, halal, or who are just eating without thought are ALL on a diet. (as are everyone)

You're on a 'special diet' of what sounds like 'balanced moderation'.

The splitting hairs REASON?

Because that's your answer. We're all on "a diet". Your diet just so happens to include certain things and exclude others, increase certain things from your normal diet and decrease certain things from your normal diet. As do all of ours.

The thing is in this country people equate thin with healthy. The media places so much emphasis on "looking good" as opposed to being healthy at a comfortable body size that our society assumes that someone who is not in need of losing weight can not possibly get any healthier, and that someone with a few extra pounds must be in dire need of medical attention. Therefore when a visibly fit person decides to eat a healthier "diet" people wonder why.

Why do you even have to tell anyone? Are you just excited? I don't think people are trying to insult you I think they are complimenting you and telling you that you look good and don't need to diet. I would just say something along the lines of making the inside of your body look as great as the outside.

yeah maybe a little defensive :) i am guessing that the people asking you have weight to lose, like real weight not 15 lbs. i would take it as a compliment - they feel you look perfectly healthy. and just repeat, "I just want to be healthier." people are used to a "diet" being for losing weight. that's just how it is. i like the "healthy living plan" idea. it's a good idea regardless, you set a good example for your family, friends, etc....there's nothing wrong wiht that at all. good luck!

I saw you wrote about this diet the other day and again today, so I had to go check it out. I just bought it from Amazon! It looks so cool! I could stand to lose the baby weight too and I just need to do it for overall health. Good luck! I can't wait to read this book. Thanks for the tip!

I don't refer to it as dieting, I refer to it as getting into better shape. Most of my belly is untoned muscle that my third did a huge number on (sideways most of the third trimester! Moved head down at the last moment before it because an issue). My weight isn't bad at all. I'm breast feeding so I know I'm holding on to some pounds to be able to feed my child :) I wouldn't mind a few pounds gone but I also know I'm building more muscle than I had and that weights more so I give up on the number on the scale and just look at how my clothes fit.

If you're enthusing about your diet to your friends and acquaintances, of course they'll ask that question. I probably would. Your answers are all good ones! The better care we take of our bodies while they're young, the better we are likely to handle aging issues and maintain a higher quality of life. If you don't want' people to ask, just don't tell them you're following this wonderful new diet plan.

I developed Type II diabetes at age 55, in spite of having taken pretty darn good care of myself throughout my younger years. But I'm still off insulin 9 years later, again because of diet and exercise. So even though there are no guarantees we won't be struck by some life-changing illness, we are still helping our future selves by helping our present selves. And teaching our kids good eating and exercise habits, too.
