Why Are Twins So Fascinating?

I have twins and going in public with them is hard enough, espically if i am by myself. It seems like i cant go 5 minutes without someone commenting, wanting to touch them, or ask questions about them. I dont want to be rude but sometimes i just want to be able to shop without answering questions, or stoping so someone can take a "peek" .Sometimes i feel like my kids are a novelty item that no one has ever seen before. Why are twins so fasinating? They are just like any other baby, there just happens to be 2 of them

What can I do next?

babies in general are fascinating. Babies draw peoples attention like nothing else.
And two of them are like two magnets.
That and most people don't have multiples.

It's probably worse with twins, but I had it all the time when my daughter was little, and still get it now that she is 2. I would have people stop me everywhere to tell me how beautiful she is and to "play" with her. It bothered me, but I made a joke out of it with my husband. I would come home and tell him only 4 stops today. It was out of control at some points. If I wasn't stopped at least 5 times in one trip, it was a slow day. I got stopped again to today to tell me how beautiful my baby was and how cute she was. Take it for the compliment that it is.

Because, secretly, we all want twins so that we don't have to be pregnant twice.

Twins are just cool. Weren't you fascinated by them before you had them? Triplets are cooler tho :)
Can you imagine how celebrities feel? Just like you but worse I'm sure.
Twins are curious to us because we like to see just how identical they look and such. All the sets of twins we had in highschool were very popular.
Wear the badge proud. They arent easy to deliver :)

I am the mother of twins too so I know EXACTLY what you are talking about but I think because people are just curious. Plus like another poster said its a baby x2! Plus they always want to see if they look alike talk alike etc. My twins are 8 and I STILL get stopped but now the questions are directed towards them. Such as "Oh are ya'll twins"? Now that they are old enough to answer the questions I let them-lol! It's a unique experience and they will be grown before you know it and then you will be the one asking that new mom all the questions and remembering back when yours were small too. Eventually the questions will get less and less because the older they get the more they try to be more independent upon themselves trying to not be recognized as "twins" anymore sometimes not but usually twins want to be their own seperate person since they can often be viewed as a package deal ;())
My twins are very close and have a very special relationship and their teachers have even commented on their relationship compared to the other twins in their grades. We have three sets of twins this year. One set is identical boys the other is fraternal girls and then of course my girls who are fraternal however no one ever believes us because everyone thinks they are identical...to me they look different but I am also their mom too....

I too have twins, now 10 boy/girl. The best one I would get is..."are they identical?" My response would be, "no they're not the same sex." And I can't tell you how many people looked at me with a total dumb look on their face still not getting it.

Seriously people...this is for those of you who still don't get it...twins have to be the same sex to be identical otherwise there is no chance of that!!!

Anyway, I totally get what you're saying because even still when people find out they're twins, they go crazy.

I have had so many people tell me that they always thought it would be fun to have twins. When our girls were infants, I wanted to laugh when they would tell me that. My DH and I barely survived the first 3 months! Like anything else that is uncommon, people just gravitate toward multiples with curiosity. Our twins still get tons of attention at 5. I don't mind it unless I'm in a hurry and I have learned how to politely walk away. I have also learned that dressing them alike brings about much more attention and many more stops! They don't wear the same outfits very often. : )

I think it's more fascinating if they are identical. I always wanted twins---and then I had them. LOVE it! But you are SO right--it can be difficult to get anything accomplished out in public. My twins are now 15. They are TOTAL opposites--so THAT is now fascinating to the parents of my kids' friends. "My son said your boys are TWINS!--Are they REALLY??" One is 6 feet tall with red hair, ivory skin and dark brown eyes. The other is 5'5 olive-skinned, brown hair and green eyes. It is quite funny becaue most people (a lot of teachers) didn't/don't know they are even BROTHERS! It makes me smile all of the time. And now they anwer the questions and don't really mind. But one of the things I NEVER allowed was people to call them "the twins". My mom tried (bragging rights, I think) but I stopped her every time. They get called "the boys". But I had read how twins hate being labeled as a package deal and don't like that term---so I jut didn't allow it. Enjoy your babies---and let the world enjoy them. I know it can be annoying---but it really doesn't last all that long. And YES---people (after seeing how opposite they look) STILL ask if they are identical!!! Ha ha!! I think that is hilarious!!

Probably because we all read "Sweet Valley High" books when we were teenagers. Let's face it, moms of little babies who are singletons have a hard time taking them out, too. I guess you could just speak very shortly to the curious people, or wear a "Yes, They're Twins. No, I Don't Ever Sleep" T-shirt when you go shopping. Or maybe you could smile, acknowledge, and keep walking. Have fun with your sweet babies!

Babies are fascinating. I have a daughter with BRIGHT red hair and we can't go anywhere without comments and conversations. Everyone has to tell me about the redhead in their life! When she was a baby my older two asked if they could dye their hair red.

Also, there was a time when twins were even rarer. Now they are more common with fertility treatments bumping up averages. When something is not common, it garners attention.

You answered the question yourself. They are fascinating because there are 2 of them. It is common to have 1 baby. People do it all the time. But how many people can say they had twins. I remember being stopped numerous times when my children were babies. People love babies and twins makes it twice as exciting. My sister and brother are twins and I can say that it will always fascinate people, especially if they are the same sex. People still ask my sister and brother if they can read each others mind and questions such as that and they are 26. I am not sure what sort of answer you are looking for on here. But you were blessed with 2 miracles and I wish you the best of luck.

I have the same problem with that, except I don't have twins, I have redheads. I can't go to the store without having their hair touched and weird comments about how they're going extinct (redheads--they're not, by the way in case you happen to see a redhead). I thought it was just a baby thing until I had a blonde. Not nearly as many comments. Anyway, the only advice I can give is stay away from Wal-Mart (which is where I get the most off the wall comments) and enjoy it. At least they're being positive and not telling you what brats they are .

When my son was a baby/toddler EVERYONE had to touch his head and comment on his super curly blond hair. This happened everywhere we went. It was weird that people always had to touch him too. He looked like Shirley Temple I guess. It got a little annoying at times - I thought he'd grow up with a big head. "Yes, Don't I have GREAT hair!". haha. You have to admit twins are kind of an amazing miracle.

I've heard it called the "celebrity factor", and it eventually dies down. Mine are two now, and we rarely get it. I think people are so fascinated because most people know how hard one baby is. They can't possibly imagine how we can do it with two, still get out to the store, be presentable, and have a smile on our face. I totally loved the attention, but get used to it for awhile!
