Hey mamas..I need your advice. My daughter has had a cough (dry) off and on for a few weeks. She has had diahrrea for the past week and just yesterday she started getting a runny nose again (after not having one for about a week). I called the ped because there is a confirmed case of whooping cough in her daycare (she's home with dad today) to see if they want to see her and they kind of left it up to me. They said to put her back on antihistamines for a few days to ensure the cough is not just post nasal drip from her nose, that she most likely DOES NOT have whooping cough because her cough does not sound like what whooping cough is and because she's been immunized. I just don't know if I should take her in today. I know, better to take her in and be seen...but what would you do? Have your kids had whooping cough and no a bad cough or whoop? Her cough is bad - pretty much all day but it's in short bursts and there is no 'whoop' sound when she breaths. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards making an appt just in case...but wanted to know what you have gone through with your kids! Also the docs think it sounds like a flu / cold that she has based on the other symptoms (I had already called earlier this morning because of her cough /diahrrea) and her brother just got over pneamonia last week so I didn't know if they wanted to check her out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Can't get her in today...they are already double booked and several hours behind. Will schedule her an appt tomorrow. Thanks mamas!

I have had wooping cough and it has a very distict cough sound. With each cough comes a huge gasp for air, as if you can't breath. Also, vomitting after or during coughing spells is quite normal. It doesn't sound like your daughter has it, especially if she has been vaccinated for pertusis (wooping cough). Definitely take her in asap if you are concerned because if it is wooping cough you have to have antibiotics within the first 2 weeks or they won't help and it has to run its course. Which for me was 8 of the most miserable months of my life. I highly recommend adults get the pertusis vaccine, now included in tetinus shots if you ask, because childhood vaccines aren't for life when it comes to pertusis!

Hope your daughter feels better soon:)

I'm not saying your child has whooping cough--but children who are immunized against Whooping cough (pertussis) can still get pertussis. They can exhibit much less severe symptoms than children who haven't been vaccinated but can still spread the pertussis bacteria around to alot of people for weeks if not treated with appropriate antibiotic. I'd take my child to the doctor if I had a question about it. I hope she's feeling better very soon!

I would take her in to the doctor. Most likely it's not whooping cough since she's been immunized and it doesn't sound like it (it's a very distinctive cough), but it could be something else that she needs antibiotics for or some other medicine.

I would take her in and have them listen to her lungs. It's better to know that all is well and if she needs meds, they can decide then. Peace of mind is worth a lot.

It's the season for RSV as well. I'd have them check her for that too. She could be coughing to clear lung secretions. I put off taking my son to the doctor when he had a cough and he ended up in the PICU with RSV. It's always better to check it out. Good luck at the doctor today!
