Whole Milk Vs. Lowfat - Should I Make the Switch Now?

My son is 26.5 months old. His ped told me to switch him to low fat milk a while back but I never did because I like the fact that the whole milk has DHA in it. My hubby is very thin and I am overweight. So far our son is lean and he eats a healthy diet fulll of fruits and veggies. Do you really think whole milk until he is 3 years old will be bad for his future health? What should I do?

E...I would not worry about this.. I have a 2.5 year old girl and an 8 month old. And I give my 2.5 year old whole milk and my pediatrician says it is fine.. that is the least of your worries.. you are doing great.. I am sure you are an awesome mom.. Who cares.. right.. Whole milk i feel and so does my hubby and my doc is healthier..
Just think of it this way, what about when our parents back in the day didn't have all of these special products and etc.. I am one of 5 and My mom gave us whole milk and we are all doing well.. ahahahahaaah seriously..
Good Luck

Dear E.-

I never have switched my kids to low fat milk...my feeling was that they needed SOME fat in their diet as we eat lean meat..and LOTS of fresh fruit and veggies.

I have 7 kids...and all have great body mass indexes. The oldest three are in college (2 on scholarships) and the 'youngers' do well in school as well...maybe it IS the whole milk?? lol

I would not sweat it!

Take care

If you or your husband has family history of heart disease, then you should switch him to skim milk. You can gradually move him one week to 2% milk, then one week to 1% milk, then move to skim. If you have no history of heart disease, then you should probably switch him to 1 or 2% any way. You can buy DHA supplements in health food stores, Whole Foods, or online for children. I have been giving my now 17 month old son DHA supplements, since he has been one year. If your son likes fish, you should try to give him salmon, sardines, etc. (natural DHA).

Good Luck!

i thought the same thing, and at my sons 3 year check up i told my doc i never switched him because he was so thin. my doc said "thin people get hypertension too" ... the fat is no good.

We kept our little girl on whole milk as well, our ped gave the same advice, but i expressed that i wanted our little girl (who is on the skinner side) to stay on whole milk- he said it would be fine. I drink whole milk myself too!
