My son recently started drinking whole milk. Right now he prefers it warmed up. I am currently using a bottle warmer and it works fine, the only problem I have is that is a little slow and for our 5 am feeding it is too slow. I was wondering if we are allowed to microwave milk? Thanks !!

What can I do next?

When I warmed bottles in the past, I found that the fastest way was to heat water in a glass in the microwave and then just put the bottle in the heated water.

Microwaving regular milk is just as dangerous as microwaving formula or breast milk. It can lead to hot spots and burn his tounge or mouth. My suggestion would be to start introducing cold milk through the day and let him get use to it. Then begin taking away warm milk altogether. Especially with the warmer weather right now, the coldness might taste really good.

Never microwave milk. It kills all the good stuff. Micro some water then put the bottle (cup) in it warm it up.

My daughter always wanted her milk warmed up at bed time. I would microwave it for 20 seconds in a coffee mug, stir it really well with a spoon so that there wouldn't be any "hot spots" then pour it into her sippy cup. Maybe you could slowly start cooking it for fewer and fewer seconds so that he gradually gets used to drinking it cold.

Yes you can microwave milk. Though only do it for about 15 sec so that it is just lukewarm and it should be just fine.

Aleisha,

In light of the recent warnings about plastics leaching polyphenolchloride, I would do as one mother suggested, either warm up a pyrex bowl of water and place the bottle in this, or transfer the milk to a glass container to warm in the microwave. Avoid placing bottles directly in the microwave and dishwasher as the high heat can leach the chemicals out of the plastic. I also agree that heating to long or too high will denature some of the "good stuff" in the milk, so short, warmings at low power are best and mix well to evenly distribute the heat before giving it to your child.

i always did but just for a few seconds to take the chill off of it, you have to watch for hot spots though jsut like with anything else.

We always have used the microwave- but shake it really really well to disperse any hot spots in it! Just be certain what you are heating it in is microwave safe.... since I hate putting plastics in the microwave, I usually use a glass pyrex measuring cup.

Hi Aleisha,

Yes you can microwave milk, you can also microwave formular or breastmilk. Why they say not to is because you need to know exaclty how much time is needed to get it the right temperature and it is important to know it has to be shaken or stirred very very well to remove any so-called hot pockets.
Microwaving can heat up some areas more than others and therefore without stirring or shaking lots of baboes got burnt very badly. This is the major reason why everybody says you shouldn't, nothing else.
So try the amount you usually give him, start slowly with ten or tewnty secons, check, add moe if needed and when you know which time amount it is, you can always use it. Just make sure to shake or stir well.

Hello Aleisha,

I am a pediatric nurse practitioner. There is alot of debate about this issue only as it relates to the fact that if you over warm the milk the child could get an oral burn. The heating time is variable depending on the wattage of the microwave. I would start with 10-20 secs and build up to 30 from there. Shake the bottle well after heating then test the temp on your inside wrist. The outside milk in the bottle gets warmer than the inside and you will want to make sure that the temperature is not too warm throughout. Other than the risk of burn due to overheating, microwaving milk is otherwise safe.

Hi Alesia, microwaves are usually not recommended but I have used it (rarely) for warming her bottle but you really have to check the temperature because it does not warm evenly. Shake it up well!
Also, if he wakes at 5AM everyday you may prepare about 10 minutes befores he wakes. Hope this helps!
