White Y Noise Machines at a Daycare Facility

Anyone have any experience with white noise machines? I have one for my 10 week old daughter that I use at home. She just started daycare on Monday and there are three other infants in there. Any time any of the babies makes some noise, it disrupts all of them. As a result, my daughter is only sleeping for about a half hour at a time. She was napping for an hour to hour and a half at home with me. I feel so bad for her. She is exhausted at the end of the day when i get her. I am thinking about getting her another white noise lamb for her crib at daycare. Has anyone had success with these at a daycare or if you have multiples at home? Appreciate any advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your advice. My daughter can sleep through vacuuming and other noises at home just fine. I use the noise machine when she is falling asleep. I read about that in the book happiest baby on the block by dr. Karp. She can sleep without it, i just thought it would be comforting to hear tbe heartbeat sounds. I just feel bad because she is so tired at home now. I will give it a week or so for her to adjust. Thanks everyone.

Since she just started daycare, I'd look at this as an adjustment process. Everything is different at daycare and she needs to get used to not being around you, being with other kids, ignoring noises...I'd give it some time. Definitely talk to them (that's what the sheets are there for - so you know what's what) but also try to be patient with the adjustment process. My DD slept with music at daycare and no music at home and learned to adjust.

Wait a while before buying a white noise machine. My guess is that they will not want it at the daycare, but aside from that she has only been there for 2.5 days!

My little one is 3 months old and her first couple of days at daycare were similar. Her teacher told my husband that every time another child cried she got upset. That lasted a week and then she got used to it.

Your little one needs to get used to sleeping through noise. Your house should not be intentionally silent while she is sleeping and in the words of my very wise pediatrician "Don't do anything to put them to sleep that you can't do anywhere and with anyone!" This is the BEST sleeping advice we heard and have lived by it! Like Jo W said, unless your home is unusually noisy, this is probably not a great idea!

If she's still not able to sleep in a week or so, talk with the provider about ideas or things they have done in the past. We sent in a swaddle wrap for our daughter because we were using one at home and it helped her sleep, so they will work with you if it's something "typical" and "simple".

Give it a little time!

I have to say unless you have some serious noise issues at home you shouldn't be using a white noise machine at home. Kids have to get used to sleeping though some noise or they will always be light sleepers.

If you do nothing she will get used to the other babies and sleep through it.

I've always used a fan in my kids' rooms and in my daycare. I disagree that kids become dependent on it and/or it makes them light sleepers. One of my kids could sleep through a bomb going off and the other is a light sleeper and they've both always slept with a fan. I have had the same experience in my daycare. Some kids are light sleepers even with a fan on and other sleep like logs. The thing that it does help is when someone coughs or sneezes or a dog barks or the phone rings.... and any number of other sudden quick noises that will wake up other kids.

I would consider giving your childcare provider more time though and your baby more time to adjust. New environments almost always take at least a few weeks to adjust to for little ones. Poor baby and mom... nothing worse than a sleep deprived little one :(

Good luck~

It's only been a couple of days, so you should give your daughter some time to adjust and learn to sleep with background noises. She really will learn to do it and it'll be a valuable skill.

IMO, who cares if your child or you are dependent on a white noise machine? Who is the white noise hurting? Some of us are light sleepers, which white noise helps with, immensely. Some sleep with the TV on, some need a light on, some need complete darkness. I say, do what you need to do to get a good night's sleep.

That being said, if your DD doesn't adjust at daycare within a couple of weeks, then bring it up with the teachers. For now, see if she adjusts.

I had 2 great sleepers who would sleep through anything, and then about 12 months they changed and got woken up by any little noise. I use white noise or a fan for them at home. They don't sleep anywhere else besides the car and it drives me crazy! I would try to get away without the white noise if you can, but if you can't after a week, then get one. It really helps, and you need to do what is best for you kids; but, give her some time first.good luck!

Do you ever try to have her sleep without the white noise machine at home? It may get to be that she is so dependent on that white noise, that she can't sleep without it.

My kids learned to sleep through all sorts of interruptions.... I was even vacuuming the floor next to the playpen with one of them, and they slept through it!

On the other hand, the parents that tried to keep it quiet while the baby was asleep, had children that had a hard time sleeping through small noises......

You may want to consider weaning her from that noise at home, so she can sleep just about anywhere.

I bet it is just a transition thing - give it a week or two and see how she is sleeping then. If she is still not getting any better after a couple of weeks talk to the director about whether there is anything that can be done to help her sleep better.

I doubt a noise machine or any other device could change whether a child is a light or heavy sleeper. As a kid, i could sleep through anything. Now I am so light a sleeper I wake when my kids move in their sleep in their bed in another room. My kids, well I have one light sleeper and one heavy sleeper. It is hard to wake my son and he goes back to sleep easily while my daughter wakes easily and has a hard time getting back to sleep. My kids share a room so they have no choice but to put up with a little noise, so I run a hepa filter in their room all night. My daughter did not always have the fan in her room, but I had it by the time my son was born and he can sleep anywhere and through anything, falling asleep even with people talking or light or anything, while my daughter needs complete quiet and dark and the fan helps her so much to block out the little sounds, like house sounds or rain, etc, things that now wake me as well. So if she doesn't adjust, maybe she is just a light sleeper and the noise machine will help. But as others said give a little time and see if she does adjust.
