White Bumps Surrounded by Red Skin on My 17 Month Old

Hi Moms!
My son is 17 months old and about two weeks ago I noticed some bumps that look a lot like acne (white with red around the base) poppin up on his body....mostly on his hand, then by his ankles, some on his back and maybe one on his face. They are not itchy and when they dry up, they kind of look like waarts. They went away but came back so we made a trip to the pediatrician yesterday. He says they are bed bug bites...but both myself and my son's father did an extremely thorough investigation of my sons room, especially by his bed. There is not a single sign of bedbugs anywhere and the bumps dont resemble bedbug bites, at least not to me. Has anyone had any experience with anything like this? We would greatly appreciate all ideas/suggestions!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your feedback!! It is always greatly appreciated.
Well....it turns out that my son was in fact being bitten by bedbugs at his daycare! I'm surprised he didn't scratch at all. When we went to the dermatologist and he also told us it was bedbug bites, I started stripping my child as soon as we would reach home. It only took a week before I saw one of those damn things on his clothes! Needless to say, he's in a new daycare now and there have been no issues at all since he started there!

Hey D.,

This is just a suggestion I have no medical backround at all but I did have a little boy who attended my daycare last year that had something called Molluscum Contagiosum. It is viral warts. They looked exactly like warts, were not itchy, and he had no other symptoms of illness (no fever, etc) She had to go to an dermatologist because the pediatrician did not know what it was. It is nothing serious he just had to put a topical cream on and couldn't come to school for a week because it is contagious. I would see if it doesn't clear up and get a second opinion. Good luck!!

My daughter has had the same thing for months that comes and goes. It got really bad once when I started to use bounce. They go away pretty fast, and when I showed the doctor, he just said it was a hypersensitivity and not to worry since they didn't seem to bother her.

sounds like coxsackie virus, aka hand, foot & mouth disease. Go to webmd.com and search it. They have pictures, too.

I haven't seen your bumps, my cousin had this as a baby and it was heat rash. Best of luck.

They might be from an allergy also. Keep track of what he is eating, especially food dyes.

you might want to see if it could be folliculitis. Red bumps that develop white heads are usually folliculitis which is an inflammation of the follicle in the skin. Causes can be bacteria like Staph or this can be cause by yeast. A pustle should be cultured to determine the source of this type of infection. The biopsy site is more inflamed because of an allergice reaction to the topical antibiotic or bandaid or it is midly infected.

that's what a hive looks like when my allergic son gets them... maybe you can keep track of what he is eating and/or touching when you notice an outbreak. You can see if you can get a referral to an allergist to get testing.

good luck

It could be a sign of sensitive and or dry skin. I have something like that on my upper arms. I found that when I washed my shirts in dreft it went away. Check with his doctor though.

Hi D.,
While a lot of us may be able to offer suggestions on different things that it could/might be, none of us can tell you what it is. If the doctor said bedbugs, I would get a pest control expert to investigate - bedbugs are usually out only at night and are a pesky, difficult problem if you are infested. Bedbugs can live inside the mattress, they can live under the floor. However, I would also suggest a referral to a dermatologist. Good luck.

I'd suggest a few things. Go and see a pediatric dermatologist. He will be better able to diagnose and treat this. If he says it's bed bugs, you MUST get an exterminator in ASAP.

Also, while waiting for the appointment, Google baby skin rashes, problems, etc. There are a lot of good sites that show various types of rashes, bites, and skin problems (eczema, etc). The photos are a bit graphic but it may help you in figuring out what he has. I hope it clears up soon!!
