I have the dyson for the pet hair and i love it! wait until Bed bath and beyond sends you one of those weekely 20% off coupons and get one. i know they are expensive but they really are great and you dont have to buy bags or filters.
I need to buy another vaccuum and am considering the expensive Dyson or the Roomba. I have all hardwoods and tile except for in my bedrooms, and while I hate how expensive the Dyson is, if it will get the carpet really clean and help my families allergies it would be worth it. On the other hand, I have had a Roomba before (the first model until my son lost the battery and some other parts to it) and loved being able to just shut the doors and turn it on and have it do the work for me. Plus if it does it for me I can vaccuum more often. How good of a job do each do on carpet, tile, and hardwood and what do you like and not like about them?

Hands down, without a doubt, shell out the extra $$ and get a DYSON. They are incredible!!!
I have the Dyson (yellow one, but not the new ball version ... it breaks too easy). Other than it being obnoxiously yellow, it works great. I have only one room that is carpet with the rest laminate w/ area rugs. I am always amazed at the amount of stuff it picks up off the area rugs and the hard surfaces. If you need the powered pet hair brush, you can order it directly from the company and it ends up being less than the Dyson that is comes with it already.
I love my Dyson! I got mine about a month ago (after getting over the sticker shock). It is worth the money! Especially if you have pets- it is great on pet hair on the floors and furniture. Now I vac all the time. I use mine on the tile floors and carpet. I have the less expensive one and the main difference I saw was all the attachments that more expensive models come with and a bigger canister-(but I empty mine every time I use it- so its plenty big enough for us). I can tell a huge difference int the amount of dirt it picks up and the way it leaves the carpet looking after you vac. You will not be disappointed. Watch for those 20% off coupons for bed bath and beyond- if they dont have what you want Lowes will honor those coupons. Thats how I bought mine.
I LOVE my mom's Orack!
hands down the best vac I've ever used
Definitely get a Dyson. We have the purple/silver one. I love it! It never loses suction (even when my long hair builds up on the brush and causes the brush to stop spinning it still has suction and very powerful suction, too). If you have long hair or pets, look into the ones specifically for pet hair.
I have a Seebo and my mother has a Miele we both have had ours for 7+ years and LOVE them. I would highly suggest checking out those two brands.
I own a professional carpet cleaning company and highly recommend a Riccar. They are well made and you will never have to buy another vaccuum, and they are around the same price as a dyson. The other nice thing, is if there are any repairs that need to be made, you can go to a local vaccuum store and they can do it there. With Dyson, at this point, you will have to send it back to the manufacturer and from what my clients say it's a pain. Also if you look at the mechanics, it's mainly plastic. Riccar is metal (more durable). Although my clients that have a Dyson, love it. I just don't know if they stand up to the test of time. The Roomba is not reported to be a high quality results vaccuum. I would only buy it to maintain in between good vaccuuming. Honestly, the IICRC (who we are certified by) recommends you vaccuum every day to help maintian the health of your carpet and your indoor air quality. Just about any vaccuum will do if you don't mind doing it every day!
The only thing I have to add is that if you get a bagless vac, make sure whoever emptys the vac doesn't have allergies. I thought the bagless was great, (seeing all that the vac picked up) until I emptied it and dust went everywhere. My son loves the vac and was right there. His allergies went nuts that night. Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.
