Hi,

I'm going to the gym to use the pool....

I have to lose some more weight and was thinking about picking up a sport....

I don't want to bulk up or look all muscle....I still want to look feminine....

What sport would you recommend ???

Any sport will do. Women don't understand the hard work and effort it takes to bulk up or look all muscle. Doing regular work outs and sports will not make you bulk up.

For comraderie, how about a Zumba or aerobic dance or jazzercise class? They usually work on toning as well as getting your heart rate up.

Bicycling: works the lower half of your body to balance out the upper body work you do in the pool. Heck, do a little running, too and you can enter a triathlon!

Tennis: the ladies who play always look tanned and toned.

Do you want a team sport of individual?

Power walking or running is awesome if you have the stamina!

I think running is by far one of the best sports/exercise you can do to see results fast and it gives you a nice, lean look without bulk. It is hard on the knees though, so you have to take care of them by stretching and resting. Runner's World magazine is a great resource and usually provide running guidelines for people just starting out to very advanced runners. It is fun to train for a 5 or 10K and marathons too. The races are very fun, the people are positive and friendly and it is usually for a great charitable cause.
Contrary to popular belief weightlifting is great exercise. Grab a trainer at your gym and have them work up a program to help you get started. Most gym contracts will allow 1 or 2 introductory sessions with a trainer to help introduce you to the equipment. They can show you how to develop lean muscle without bulking up. Let me tell you, with consistent effort it works! You will notice muscles where you didn't think you had them! LOL
Other fun sports are Zumba, kickboxing, spinning classes and Yoga. Try a variety of things and see what you like best. The secret is finding activities that you will stick to for overall good health. Good luck!

I used to be a swimmer, and I miss it, but for sheer toning and looking feminine but super-hot, kettlebell training is a great substitute. It's not a sport, per se, but it will shape you and tone you and get you sleek but not cut. I don't even like my kettlebell teacher, but I keep going back because I like the results so much! Maybe your gym offers an intro course. If you try it a couple of times, you may decide you like it.

i used to rollerblade too, if you have a couple of nice places near you to go to like i do, it really is nice. i dont do anything now except chase the kids, but if i was gonna squeeze in one thing, it would be yoga.

If you have access, rowing is awesome - it might mean looking into seeing if there is an adult rowing club in your area. An alternative are the rowing machines if the gym has them. They work your whole body (arms, shoulders, core, legs) without the trauma of your knees pounding the pavement.

Pilates is good too, as well as kickboxing and Zumba.

Swimming. I was a competitive swimmer for many years. It burns a lot of calories. I never looked all muscle, but it will tone you. It works out every muscle in your body, and it's not hard on your joints like running is.

You can't do this in the gym, but rollerblading is, by far, my favorite! It's not hard, and you can burn so many calories! My friend and I used too put our kiddos in bike trailers (the ones that have the handlebar, too). We would rollerblad 3 miles to a little park-let the kids play for 20-30 minutes, then rollerblade back to our vehicles. All told- 6 miles or so. It was on a trail and we saw rabbits, turtles, snakes etc on our way. It was a blast. I miss it so bad! You can rollerblade with or without kids. Just a thought!! :)

Running/walking, kettle bell workouts and biking! You might think kettle bells will bulk you up, but they won't. It's actually very hard for a woman to achieve that "bulky" look without trying for it. I have to say that kettle bells have changed my life! Hard core weight loss, core strength and toning in a no impact workout! Check out gymcondition.com -the woman in the photos is the owner-NOT bulky -nearly perfect!

This is not a sport, but we do Insanity at home. It is insane!!! and will get you fit very fast!

Also sport-wise, I would say Volleyball or Softball :)

Tennis. You can hit the ball against the wall when you don't have an opponent. It's a great cardio-confusion workout. Think Anna Kornakova!
