Which IUD Is Best?

I'm in a committed relationship and don't want the stress of wondering if I could be pregnant every month. I'm considering getting an IUD. I've had the Paraguard 3 years ago(cooper IUD) before but had it taken out because my periods were painful and sex felt uncomfortable. I've tried all kinds of hormonal birth control - pill, patch, ring...and hated how it made me feel. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

If you can't work with your regular gynecologist, or even if you can and want another opinion, I would go to a Planned Parenthood clinic that deals with all kinds of women and all kinds of methods of birth control. They have counselors who will speak with you before you meet with a doctor. You need a review of your medical history in order to make a decision. Take a copy of your records with you.

I had the Mirena IUD for about 7 years and loved it. Never even knew it was there, felt nothing and had no symptoms (until it came loose and had to be removed.)

i suggest you have this conversation with your gyn. they know ALL the bc options out there and will know common side effects of them as well. they also know which brands you have tried. i know with the pill alone theres several that have varying doses of different artificial hormones, so maybe you just needed a different one. my dr has me on lo loestrin pill and if i get the headaches back she sputtin gme on the estrogen free shot as a last resort since int the estrogen that causes my headaches but you may have a totally different situation that your dr will be able to help with

I don't know, I don't take birth control and haven't for years, but a co-worker of mine said she gets birth control in the form of a shot, which she gets every 3 months. She seems to be happy with it. I am thinking it's the Depo-Provera shot. Have you tried it? This may be something you want to speak to your doctor about, and explore. It may work for you, because you wouldn't feel it and it would not have any impact on sex or cause pain in your body. I have read about people whose tissue grew around the IUD, got very ill and required emergency surgery, not sure if you had something like that happening with you, but it sounds scary, so if you plan to try another IUD, make sure you ask questions about such risks with your doctor, prior to implanting it. Other than that, maybe you want to consider asking your boyfriend to use condoms, or if you're not planning to have kids, he can get a vasectomy or you can get your tubes tied.

With your parameters, I'm not sure. A doctor can best advise you.

I have Mirena and I love it. I'm on my 2nd one. But, I took birth control pills for years and didn't have negative side effects, so it's not a surprise that I do fine with a hormone-based IUD. It sounds like your body reacts differently than mine.
