Which Is Safer the Jump Seat or the Front Seat?

So very very rarely my father in law has to pick up my son in his little pick up truck. In fact in his four years on the planet it has only happened once. :) But the boys have started kayaking and now there is a possibility that he may be in PawPaw's truck occasionally (hopefully they will stick with Daddy's bigger truck, but you never know). The truck has a small jump seat...very small, it's almost like a stool behind the passenger seat. My son's carseat fits on there, but just barely and not properly, it's at a bit of an angle. And this seat only has a lap belt. Is this the safest spot, or should he ride up front with the air bags turned off? Hoping this is a non-issue, but I have to be prepared for a well meaning, but not always conscience PawPaw. TIA!

So What Happened?

Well from the links provided, statements here and my research it looks like the front seat is safer. Good to know, but I think we will just continue to stay away from PawPaw's truck.

Is this jump seat sideways or facing backward? If his seat does not face forward then it will not protect him properly from an accident. I was looking into buying one of those old time station wagons with the jump seats in the back/sides and found out that the safety seats absolutely must never be used facing backward or sideways.

They do not recommend children EVER sitting in the front seat, even with no air bags. If PawPaw has another option then I would highly recommend that you tell him that he must ALWAYS ride in such and such truck and install the carseat where you want him to sit. After ONE TIME of my parents improperly transporting my children I made sure to always do the seats myself. Except once= they picked us up from the side of the road where we had been in a terrible car accident. My parents took the kids and I stayed to talk to the sheriff. Well, they didn't do the carseat right and my already traumatized 2 year old fell in the floor!

FRONT! My hubby is a mechanic and all the steel and roll bars are located around the front of the cab.

That, and my friend's husband was killed in the "back seat" of a pick up truck, while the folks in the front survived - A HEAD ON CRASH!

If it has airbags, a local automotive repair place can install a shut off passenger switch for little $

You cannot use any kind of car seat in a jump seat, you MUST put it in the front with the full seat belt. You can never use just the lap portion of a seat belt with a booster (and nobody should use just a lap belt really).

So use the front seat and turn the airbag off, push the seat as far back as it will go ,and use the full seat belt.

Will his car seat fit up front? If so, I think that is the safest place. Kayaking sounds fun!

I would call the auto maker and ask them. I don't think we can answer this question. They may tell you "neither" to CYA. But it's still the best way to find out the information you need.

He is safest in the front seat with the full seat belt! If the airbags can be turned off, then do so.
