I have been told that it helps to rub Vick's Vaporub on the feet and then cover them with socks while the child sleeps helps.
Hi,
My 18 mo ld has had a cough for the past 2 days that bothers him mostly at night. He is no longer congested, but I can tell he has "itchy" throat that makes him want to cough. Which cough medicine is safe for toddlers?? I read a recent list in which many of the OTC brands were considered hazardous. I am hoping to go buy him something today so that my sweet little boy can sleep better tonight. Thanks in advance!!

YES, if it allergens then you have to go to the doctor. You might want to try cleaning his room before he goes to bed to see if it does let up. If not, then take him first thing in the morning. But if not, then it's ok for children to cough. It's natural. But if an infection occurs then he need antibiotics. But most of the time he doesn't need a strong cough medicine, he's going to cough either way. You do not want to numb the coughing reaction, that is something natural. But I see your concern, please do not be offended.
And it would be a good idea to call a nurse. She might recommend giving him something warm to sooth his throat, or give him a steam bath, and just let him play a bit.
GOOD LUCK,
CJR
Coughing at night may be a sign of allergies, you might consider seeing an allergist if this doesn't let up. I agree with Alexandra I would definetly call a nurse to ask about the cough medicine.
my ped prescribe my baby Ceron DM and it is very good medicine my baby is 5 months and it works well for her
I also have a boy born in late May and he too coughs excessively at night. After trying everything I have discovered that LITTLE NOSES COUGH DECONGESTION really works. Its works so well and allows him to sleep throughout the entire night. I absolutley love it. I usually get it at Walgreens and is only about $4.

If you want to try homeopathic remedies (which are COMPLETELY safe), you can try giving your child tablets from Hyland's. I use them with my children (one is 6 months old the other 5). Those tablets dissolve instantly on the tongue so their is no risk of choking.
Depending on your child's symptoms, you can chose the adapted remedy. At the moment I use the one for bronchial cough ("for the relief of symptoms of cough with mucous due to cold").
My daughter coughs a lot at night, so I give her two tablets and she is usually relieved very quickly. I also give her a spoon of honey and I put an extra cushion under her head so that mucous doesn't accumulate in her throat and triggers another bout of cough.
It costs about $4 and I find it at Central Market or Wholefoods.
You should really call your pediatrician's office and speak to a nurse. I can tell you what mine said recently, but your doctor may have a different opinion as there is so much debate out there. Also, they can take your child's age and weight and give you the proper dosing instructions. My son is 23 months old, and was told to use Robitussin CF for his cough a couple of weeks ago. He also said the Children's Triaminic was good to use. Just get the one formulated specifically for your own child's symptoms so you don't get one with more medication than you actually need.
