Which Hospital to Go To?

My husband and I are planning to have another baby and I just found out that my OB/GYN only delivers at one hospital - one that is not covered by my insurance. I need to find a new OB/GYN. I thought that if I have to find a new one, I might as well make sure I can deliver at a hospital of my choice. My insurance covers Alta View and LDS hospital. Has anyone had experience delivering at one of these? Good OB/GYN that delivers at them? Also, has anyone had experience with the NICU at either of these? My daughter was 7 1/2 weeks early and was in NICU, so I want to be prepared, just in case.

What can I do next?

I delivered all 3 of my children up at Alta View. My youngest was going to be born to early and they were going to send me to LDS since Alta View does not have a NICU. Luckily she didnt need it. I saw a doctor there and have now found out she was not so good. I now see Lisa Gravelle and she is AWESOME. I have never been cared for so well or had a doctor pay such close attention to me and my symptoms. I would advise you to go with a doctor who delivers at LDS. I have been in with preterm labor and they are soooo nice. It is a great hospital. Also.. I had a friend who had twins there and loved the NICU. Good luck

I delivered both of my boys at Alta View with Kenneth Larsen, I love him, he has a good bed side manner. He has never made me feel uncomfortable. I had a good experince with delivery there.

I had my last baby at LDS Hospital. I had to see a high-risk doctor (perinatologist) and he was wonderful. The staff was wonderful and they took very good care of my baby who was delivered via cesearan 3 weeks early. I definitely recommend anyone there. I saw quite a few different OB's while I was there, because I had to be seen each week and my dr wasn't always available. All of them are wonderful!

I delivered at Alta View. My OB/GYN is also one floor up from Maternity. His name is Keith Hansen. I usually see his nurse practitioner, Martha, who is awesome, but had to see Dr. Hansen toward the end of my pregnancy. I really liked him a lot. I have no NICU experience, but I did have a low birth weight baby and I was impressed with the extra steps they took to make sure everything was 100% with her.

I strongly recommend LDS. I have a three and a half year old daughter that was born there. My OB/GYN was Dr. Scott Rallison. He's wonderful!! I was extremely sick while pregnant with my little girl, to the point that I ended up on a feeding tube for a while. Well, that was while I was up at the University. Then my insurance changed and I went to LDS. That's where Dr. Rallison took over and started caring for me. I was still extremely sick, had to have a pic line for a little over three months, but Dr. Rallison stayed right on top of my care. He always checked the baby with ultrasounds and whatnot. I was (and still am!)completely comfortable with him.
As for the hospital and the care in the NICU, I strongly recommend LDS as well. My nephew was born with an infection and had to be kept in the NICU for a few days. They took awesome care of him! They are all very professional and respond well to every need!
Another great thing about LDS, if your baby does need the help of a pediactric specialist, Primary Childrens is right up the street! OK, so it's about a ten minute drive, but it's that much closer than if you were at Alta View or any other hospital!
Good luck and best of wishes to you and your family!

Hi J.. Both hospitals are wonderful. I would go to the one you are closest to. One of my kids was born at LDS and it was a wonderful experience. My OB/GYN was from the Avenues Women's Center, which is one of the best in the State. In fact, people come from Idaho and Wyoming. They are all female OB/GYNs. Warning, they can be busy but they'll book you through your pregnancy. J

Good Luck.

Hi! Congrats on your pregnancy. I am a nurse at LDS (in the ICU, not maternity) and I think it is a fantastic hospital. I think it would be your best choice especially if your baby needs to go to the NICU. Good luck! A.

I delivered my second child at Alta View. My doctor works in the same building (just one floor up from Maternity) and her name is Kathryn Walker, however last I heard she was only accepting patients who are pregnant. I had a good experience except for the fact that when I delivered in the late evening, they only had one anaesthesiologist on duty and he was in a c-section so I didn't get an epidural. But the nurses were nice and the LDR and post-partum rooms were nice. Even the food wasn't so bad. But we luckily didn't have to deal with NICU. Overall it was a good experience at a nice hospital. Good luck in your decision.
