I live in the south where it doesn't snow so I don't have this problem with coats and boots. However, when I did live up north many years ago, I remember as child, my mom would take coats and place them in her room and boots/shoes stayed at the door. We never let anyone into the house with shoes on. I've adopted that policy as well. Shoes stay at the door, family or not. Have a wonderful party! I miss the snow.

I have family in Wisconsin. You people get some crazy weather!
We always put coats and purses in a bedroom if we don't have enough room in the coat closet. If you have a covered porch, boots can stay outside.
We always take our shoes off when we visit relatives, especially if we've been tromping around outside. I'm just used to having a place on the porch for that. Make a place somewhere for those who want to remove their boots. Put down something inside that will keep the carpet dry. Get a good mat for wiping feet before people come in. That should do it.

Have a great time!

That is alot of shoes and boots, we have had nearly that many people over, but usually we don't take shoes off in the house, just vaccuum really well afterward. you could pur down a cheap plastic table cloth or shower curtain and use it as a large shoe-mat....and I would echo just putting all coats/purses on a large bed.

yes, our guests have to take shoes off whether summer or winter. I have a huge area rug by the front door. If wintertime, i put towels where the shoes go, if summertime no towels. Then that area rug gets washed frequently. I also have house slippers for people to wear around the house. Coats we hang, plenty of room for those. If you don't have enough closets just put them in a spare room you have on top of something.

Coats on a bed, yes, in a big pile. Shoes - put down rugs (I like the idea of one by the door for removing, then another in the bedroom for storing, since you have such a large group). Please don't have your guests leave boots in the garage or porch so that they are freezing (!) when they have to put them back on. I love the idea of slippers for guests, but 30 would probably not be possible because of the cost. Maybe you could suggest they bring those in your invitation?

Any responder here who says shoes stay on feet does NOT live in the Midwest :-) We just got 8 more inches of snow yesterday on top of the 20 or so we already had here in Minnesota!

We put the coats on our bed. We have bought a couple big rugs and set one in our entry way and the other in our bedroom. Have them take shoes/ boots off on the first rug then you can carry them into the bedroom and set them on the second rug, that way they aren't getting in the way. (We have a small living room so the shoes just get in the way.) Have fun and happy birthday to whomever is having it.

At our house, snowy/dirty shoes stay outside in the garage. If they are not dirty, they go right into the kids (and our) room. Even my 1 year old puts his shoes away!

If I were having a party with that many people, honestly I would not ask them to remove their shoes. But that is just me. If you want to, why not get a few rubbermaid containers or some plastic shelving that you can line with towels so they can take their shoes off and put into the towel-lined shelf to dry off?

I put coats on our bed as well. We do have hooks going down to our basement that could hold maybe 10 coats so if that was enough, I would do that but it sounds like you'll need more space so it's better to put them all in one location.

We always have coats and stuff in a bedroom piled on the bed. Sorry to whoever gets here first; they have to dig through the pile to find their coat! We put a few towels (dark colored) near the door for people's shoes. They can take them off as soon as they walk in.

We always put jackets in a bedroom on a bed for large parties. You can lay out something on top of the bed (canvas, sheet over a tarp, whatever) to keep the bed from getting wet. One would suppose if there isn't room by a door that boots could go there as well. The *problem* however, is that even one pair of snowy boots or shoes in the house means wet socks for everyone else. So if you don't have a place right by the door... I'd say you're just going to have to steam the carpets / wash the floors the day after.

Coats in a bedroom if no room in coat closet. I have washable rugs I throw down in my foyer when we have a number of guests.

I put coats on my bed and the shoes either stay in the entry-way or we piled them out in the attached garage. Good luck, sounds like a fun holiday with all those people!
