Hi Mommies! We are from fort worth and were wanting to go on a little trip, no more than 3-4 hours away for a day or two. We have an 18 month and a 3 year old. My husband has a broken leg, so no beaches or water. We were thinking austin but is there ANYTHING to do there for kids? What about Fredricksberg? We need helllllp?

Thanks for any opinions and help!

Have you thought about taking the Amtrak train anywhere? We live in Burleson and used to take the train up to OKC. It sounds boring, but my kids LOVED it really. It's 3/4 hours by car and 4 hours by train to get there. You go through some really prett country on the train, and there's enough room for the kids to get up and walk around. On the way up it's at night, and mine fell asleep and on the way back it's during the day so they could see more. It takes you to downtown OKC where they've really done a good job fixing up Bricktown. It's with in walking distance of a few different hotels, there's a nice canal area with food choices, a playground, one of those big fountains that spring up in the ground, and a movie theatre. But, we'd enjoy just walking around down there, going to the play ground, the kids would play in the fountain, etc. The last time we went my kids were about the same age as yours now (they are 3 and 5 now).

Fredricksberg I think it more for adults than kids. But Austin is bound to have stuff for the kids to do. San Antonio is also not that far really, which has a lot of choices as well. Hope you find something!

We recently got back from Fredericksburg with our six year old and two year old. We walked around downtown, swam at the pool and went to the playground in the Marketplatz. There is also a place outside of town called Wildseed Farms. It is a huge garden center with plants and paths, but there are lots of things for little hands to grab, so a stroller is a good idea.

You could stay in Cedar Park (just north of Austin) and ride the Hill Country Flyer (train) to Burnet. They have lots of shops and a gun show. Sea World is San Antonio is great, and they have a great water play space for little kids, shows, etc. There is a lot of walking, though, so it depends on how well your husband is getting around with a broken leg. Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose is probably not a good idea with a broken leg - lots of paths and steps.

San Marcos might be fun. They have a great outlet mall and this huge children's park. We went through there and stayed one night over spring break. They also have turned Aquarena Springs into an educational center with a glass bottom boat ride, a swamp walk and a little aquarium/reptile house. They did a good job converting it. There is also this little kitchsy place called Wonder World that is something we would have done when we were small. It is a combination animal drive through, save, out of balance house and something else. We did it a few years ago and it is kind of a throw back to "Griswald" type family deal, but it was fun.

Agreed that Fredericksburg is not too kid friendly. Why not stay close? You could do Glen Rose one day, Six Flags another, Zoo/Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History (both are great for toddlers). You could spend a night at the Great Wolf Lodge.

Either way, have fun!
