Where to Find Cheap Food for a Mom in Need?

If you remember my friend with two kids (and had two cats but had to leave them at the vets) that did not have a home, you'll be glad to hear that they're not living in a tent down by the lake anymore and that they are in a motel and have help looking for a cheap apartment.

But food is an issue. She doesn't qualify for food stamps which is hard to believe, but CCA said "no". I know someon on here knows a ministry where you can get food cheap. Her daughter has a metabolic disorder, so she needs canned meats like tuna/chicken for school lunches (free lunch at school would be great, but she has to have a high-protein, low fat diet or she gets sick).

If you knwo of any ministry or group in the Denton/Lake Dallas/Lewisville area, please tell me and I'll connect her.

What can I do next?

I am really questioning why she does not qualify for any food stamps, seriously! I have qualified while my husband was in school, and we were making some money, but not enough! When you say CCA said no, is that who you were trying to get food stamps from, or did you go through Texas Health and Human Services?? That is something I would fight harder for if I were her. But, in the mean time, I agree that the food pantries and angel food are a good way to go. Hmm, how sad for her, you are a great friend to try to help out here!

Soemthing is not right. If her daughter has a metabolic disorder she SHOULD have a case manager or social worker at her physician's office. Children with metabolic disorders get checked fairly often. She needs to contact whoever it is the physician's office and let him/her know her situation. There are a ton of options out there and that is (part of) what the social worker does. With the metabolic disorder, I'm betting there are foundations out there to help. Also, this has an impact on her ability to get food stamps. She needs to talk to someone who knows the system. The other option is to go to Health and human services and get someone there to talk to her about her options. Make sure she brings proof of income with her.

Our church here in The Colony has a food pantry. The Storehouse is open Monday and Wednesday from 9-12. The address is 5600 N Colony Blvd. I would second the vote for Angel Food, lots of meat included for $30 a month. The date for turning in your order will be coming up soon and food will be delivered the 3rd Saturday of the month. I have a hard time grasping the fact that she can't get food stamps. I would ask someone else...she needs to get a social worker working on her behalf.

T.,
Try Angel Food Ministries at http://www.angelfoodministries.com/. They have locations all over and in Denton and Lewisville for sure. They have a new menu each month and it would help out with the food for sure. I don't think they have special needs menus but at least it would be food for the mom and one of the kids and she would just have to pay regular prices for the other child's food.
Hope that helps!
