Where to Advertise Car for Sale

We just sold my car to Carmax. We had a great experience there - they will buy your car even if you don't buy one from them. They gave us a very fair price (actually more than we expected) and everyone there was very helpful and nice. My husband and I just did not want to deal with advertising and having lots of strangers coming over to our house for test drives so we went with what was easiest and it really turned out to be a great experience. Google "car sites" and a slew will come up... I am not sure which a free. Some to note, cars.com, vehix.com, edmunds.com. There is also Ebay - cars. You could also advertise through Tribune/Sun-Times as well as Chicago Reader or local paper and Craigslist. I would highly recommend getting a blue book value first - Kelly's Blue Book. As well as comparison shop on-line first so you know what to potentially set your price at. I too would honestly go to CarMax once you have an idea of a going price. And if the price is fairly close - go with them. There isn't much hassle to it at all and you can walk away with a check that day... just give yourself a few hours to complete the process though.

We sold our car on autotrader.com. It wasn't free (I think about $30?) but we received calls immediately and sold our car in about a week. It wasn't much considering how easy it was. You could also charge $30 more for your asking price to cover the cost (hee hee - just kidding ;)

I would put it on www.Craigslist.com

I'm going to second the carmax idea. You can also go there and just get a quote, if you don't think it's a good offer you don't have to take it.

For free advertising, I would also recommend craigslist, but do realize you will have a hassle of showing the vehicle, people wanting to have it checked by their mechanic, the potential problem of paymentnegotiations, etc.

I would also strongly suggest Carmax. We have sold several vehicles to them and this was after we had gotten prices from dealers (Carmax was always higher and very fair).
